Not sure if there is a a topic already about this as I haven't looked.

DS is currently doing 45 min naps, I go in and he is wide awake, smiling and not grumpy (sometimes). Not too sure what to do if I get him up as I'm trying to do the feed/play/sleep routine. So really my question is do I get him up and start the routine again after 45 mins? Any suggestions would be great!!

Thanks!

My son was like that up until recently.

I tried a few different things to help out.

- I put the stereo in our room to static and have that going for all his day sleeps now.

- I put blankets up over our curtains to make sure the room was super dark.

- I also found that I was going in to him as soon as I heard him chatting or stirring (about that 45min to 1hour mark), lately I've been leaving him and about 10-15mins later he's back asleep and now sleeps for about 2hours at a time.

- Have a look at the sleepstores website too as they have a lot of great info.

Good luck

My daughter has always been like that and even though some people say that babys sleep for 45 min sleep cycles and you should leave them to go back to sleep i never found it worked and she would end up screaming. I just went with it. In saying that she still does 45 min - 1 1/2hr sleeps. And as for the routine, well that went out the window for us and she ended up feeding herself to sleep (as you can't really feed them 2 hourly can you!)

Sorry that really was not very helpful was it

Hunter does the 45 min thing sometimes and I tend to get him up if he starts screaming. Sometimes he wakes and does go back to sleep and might sleep for 2 -3 hours (once in a blue moon!).

I do the wake/feed/play/sleep thing too and do end up feeding 2 hourly if thats when he wakes. Its not every feed because his playtime is getting a wee bit longer.

Dont really have any tips, I found it much easier to settle him when he was in the bassinet than the cot.

I agree with all the things that MamaT suggested!!! The 45 min thing can be SO annoying, especially if they are grumpy!!

The only other thing I can suggest if nothing else works and bubs is still tired, get him up for 10 or so minutes and try and put him back down? One of my friends does that and her bubs just thinks it is time for another nap!

I do the feed play sleep thing with Lilah. She went through a stage of only sleeping for 45 minutes so I changed it (like 1st time preggies suggested) to feed play sleep play sleep. I would get her up for about 20 minutes and play with her, then resettle her back to sleep. It worked really well for us.
Good luck, the sleep cycle thing can be a PITA!!!

Heya, yeah that 45 minute thing is a darn nuisance. I've had the same problem with Harlow. I think it's totally up to you as to what approach you take. Some would say, get them up, others would say, leave them be.

Personally, I have found that sleep promotes sleep. The 45 minutes was driving me nuts so one day I just decided enough was enough. Last week, I left him to cry    It was hard but it worked. He went back to sleep and ended snoozing for nearly 2hrs, yay!   A week later and it's (touch wood) working well now. I spent Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday getting him into a nice cycle of sleeping longer and then we had a carer come and look after him on Wednesday. He woke after 45minutes and she got him up - grrrr. All my hard work gone!   Then of course he didn't feed well and was generally grumpy! Anyway, I had words with her and now she leaves him too. Today he slept 3hrs!   Good wee boy

Good luck! It's not an easy one!

They just had a thing on the sleepstore facebook thing about someone having success on the 'wake to sleep' method and someone else put a link with the below info.   I have been meaning to try this, and not sure why I never have! I think I'll give it a go on Monday.

These two techniques are used to help a baby who is habitually waking early from naps (e.g. waking at 45 mins). They are methods of trying to extend short naps. In each case its best to observe a nap or two and write down the times they move and wake. You choose one method.

1) Wake to sleep (w2s). Stir them 5-10 mins before they tend to wake. You go in the room 5-10 mins before they tend to wake up and gently rub their cheek, head etc until they BARELY stir and then you let go. You are attempting to pull them from deep sleep to then start a new sleep cycle. You do not actually wake them up. If you are not totally sure if they moved, wait a min or two and do it again. This is better then doing it too much and waking them fully. A bare movement usually works. If your baby still wakes up you can try doing the wake to sleep a few minutes sooner. You really have to experiment with the timing. A few babies have a hard time stirring. These moms have had some success with just turning them over or moving their entire body in some way.

2) Holding through the jolts (httj). You place one hand on your baby’s legs, other on their chest and attempt to assist them through the jolts. You would do this a few mins before the jolts that wake them occur. You apply pressure until they stop jolting, plus about 5 mins. If they haven’t moved more, you can stand back and see what happens. If they fully wake you will have to employ your typical method of sleep to send them back to sleep. Some babies you have to also shield their eyes with your hand to stop them from looking around. If you use a paci you can re-insert the paci when and if your baby looks for it. This would be when they are searching for it with their mouth.

***Please note that from 3-6 months of age, babies are working on organizing their day sleep and some need help learning to transition through one sleep cycle and into the next. If you know the A time before the nap is exactly what your baby needs and he/she is not waking for any other reason, then it might be due to this developmental stage. Some babies respond well to these nap extending techniques after a week or even two of consistent use. Other babies may need these techniques used for a month or two until they grow out of the developmental stage.
