Topic: Shellfish! Bugger.... :( Posted: 29 July 2010 at 7:40pm |
Ah I'm a bit worried about this now....we went out to a special themed engagement dinner last night and even though the groom-to-be knows me quite well, it turns out they didn't cater for vegetarians AT ALL so the only thing other than bread that I felt I could ethically eat (and that was questionable) was the shellfish. EVERYTHING was shellfish, prawns....or beef. Seeing as I very very occasionally eat a piece of fish-and never ever beef- then I thought that was the best option. I asked the chef if it was ok for pg women to eat shellfish & prawns and he said yes they're cooked and hot etc. (although the shrimp weren't)...but now I'm worried cos apparently we're NOT meant to eat shellfish!!! Grrrrrr
So I'm annoyed with myself, with the chef, and with our friend for not remembering to cater for me lol. I feel ok so far (touch wood), should I tell my mw or GP or just hope it was ok? I mean, I'll know if I get sick....right?

i think if you are ever concerned about anything just talk to your midwife
the good news is that if you were at a restaurant the shellfish is likely to have been very good quality and fresh as opposed to shellfish bought in the supermarket.

You would know by now if you were going to get sick from dodgy seafood...
I dont think you need to tell mw/gp unless you start to feel unwell...

I thought cooked shellfish were fine, but it's not recommended you eat them often... I could be wrong though as I hate seafood so haven't looked into it properly

If it was dodge you'd know about it by now, and if it was cooked you'll be fine.
The main reason its on the do not eat list is cause most people eat their shell fish either raw or cold.

I'm sure they'd have taken lots of care at an event like that (imagine the repercussions if a bunch of guests got food poisoning!), and since everything was hot and freshly cooked, I'm sure it'll be fine. Shellfish can be prone to food poisoning, but I think under the circumstances it's not too likely to be an issue, and as has been mentioned, you're not showing any signs of being crook yet.
Grr at them for not providing for vegetarians, though! I thought everyone did that these days!!

I am sure it will be fine, and as someone else mentioned if you were going to get ill from it, it would've happened by now. There is no harm in mentioning it but try not to stress about it!

If you get sick from it then yes it can be bad, if you dont then your fine.
You would be sick by now if the shellfish had of been bad, so dont stress, you'll be fine.

Don't stress hun, you would have been sick by now if the shellfish was dodgy.
I was told not to eat anything without eyes and make sure it's piping hot - so prawns etc ok mussels, scallops not... but as I love seafood I have been eating everything as long as it's fresh and hot. No issues so far!

You'll be fine Emmecat.
I ate loads of (cooked) shellfish throughout my pregnancy - mussels, scallops, prawns, oysters etc... I love it WAY too much!
ETA: I totally get the annoyance factor though! I went to a friend's wedding when I was pg, and DH brought me a glass of the supposedly non-alcoholic punch. It wasn't til I'd drunk about 1/2 a glass that someone mentioned there was vodka in it!

as everyone says it is not worth stressing about as if there was a problem you would know by now. I definitely wouldnt recommend eating shellfish while you are pregnant as there is not only the risk of food poisoning, but the risk of paralytic shellfish poisoning and the toxin that causes it is not destroyed by heating to over 120 degrees so it is still active. psp is caused by algal blooms where the shellfish is collected so if you know the source then you are probably ok.

Oh, that's so frustrating! I'm always really cautious of punch, it's so often the 'non-alcoholic' option that you kind of get used to assuming that, people should make it clear if it's not!

I had the same sort of thing happen to me when 8mths preg. It was at a catered wedding and I had to get them to make me a sandwich as there was nothing I could eat. And I thought that it was common practice to have at least one totally vege meal.

Ah the joys of being a vegetarian...man I found it hard to find things I could 'safely' eat while out when pregnant. Oh when I say that I mean lunches etc when on the run...not supposed to eat salad so that rules a heck of a lot of vege stuff out!
Probably why I got such a sweet tooth, just ate muffins haha! Oh and hot chips...the one thing you know almost every cafe has...

LOL me too!
How frustrating they didn't have a vege option. Glad to hear you haven't had any adverse effects though Emmecat.
