Topic: Day 2 - really not so flash! Posted: 31 October 2006 at 3:53pm |
OMG...I think yesterday lulled me into a false sense of security!
Honestly, Maddie has hardly slept today, she was up at 5.00am, down half an hour later until 7.00am, yelled on and off for the next hour until her next feed, was still awake and yelling in spite of being tired until the next feed (around which point I tearfully lost it and yelled at her - yes I'm totally ashamed of myself), finally went down after that until 1.30pm and has now been awake again and is still yelling on and off.
It's one of those frustrating situations where she is changed, fed, burped etc and there really seems to be nothing wrong but she is exhausted and won't sleep!!
Oh boy I can't wait until this all settles down!

Aww im sorry to hear yourve had a rough day chicka! Im having one of those days to where madam refuses to sleep! Dang teething!
It does get better and dont feel bad i have yelled at Ella and then felt really silly haha
It got to the point for me where i had to put her in her cot and shut the door and walk away before i went completely insane. Then when i went back to her i was calm and she settled really quickly. Sometimes thats all it takes is for you to be calm aswell

Oh Paws, that's a toughie. I can totally sympathise, as we've had a very similar 2 days!
All better today though - think she's so tired, she can't do much but sleep. Currently been out to it for 2˝ hrs, and had a 2 hour sleep this morning too. Yay.
Hope things are better soon!

You'll only get more and more confident the longer you're in charge of little Maddie... big hugs to you, Paws, it's not always easy, but (times of sickness and teething aside... eeek), it'll only get better. Jess's tactic of putting bubs somewhere safe and taking a breather is a winner though. I won't give you any of the "ah just take it one day at a time" guff that my mother tried when I was having a rough day and feeling clueless and wondering if baby and I would ever have a liveable routine... just made me want to scream at the woman for having no sympathy! Don't be hard on yourself - you're doing the hardest job in the world. Here's hoping tomorrow is a repeat of that stunning day1 that you both had.

Right now I'm comforting myself with the idea that she must be so tired she is going to sleep soon! She has just had another big feed and after several head splitting yawns I put her back down...yup, she is crying again. Surely she is going to sleep through the night tonight at this rate!

I'm with the other guys - it does get better. I think everyone has those days. Maddie could be going through a growth spurt she's about the right age for one. Those days can be very trying.
Big hugs.

Paws, it does get better - honestly it does. Putting Maddie in a safe place and going away from her dometimes works a treat. Put her in her bed and then go outside for a bit so you can't hear her. If she is still crying make sure she's not in pain from wind and then leave her again.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

sounds like what gabriel used to do - turned out he had wind and a teaspoon of cooled boiled water would make him burp and then he would settle down...(and he would burp when i winded him after a feed, but i guess it was deep down hidden wind.)

When everything got too much for me, I'd put the baby to bed while I had a cuppa. Takes less than 10 minutes and is/was really comforting so I calmed down enough to try again. (Briona had colic/reflux for 3mos so was a tough one to settle.)

showers while baby cries is good for getting the calm back - the running water means you can't hear the screaming.

I think there's something in the air because for the past 2 days Caitlin has flat out refused to sleep during the day (bit of a blessing in one way as she has slept through the nights without stiring at all) but its not nice to come home from work, really looking forward to having a cuddle when all she wants to do from 4pm to 10pm is scream in your face
I totally agree with the others, when you've gone through the check list and there's nothing else other than her not wanting to sleep/throwing a tanty, put her in a safe place and walk away. I'll admit I've spoken very sternly to Caitlin before. My mum's advice was they don't remember it and they certainly don't love you any less just because you had your own tanty, so don't beat yourself up - you're only human!
Big hugs Paws.

Widespread baby rebellions... Sounds like Maddie and Caitlin are leading the charge.
Here's hoping it is a short lived rebellion. (Hannah is heading the toddler branch. Not impressed.)

I don't the scientificaness of this statement, but windy days make kids go nuts. Our kids at playcentre are crazy on windy days and mum used to get it all the time with her primary school kids too.

Oh Paws it wil get better, but i agree with the others, put baby in her cot, make sure she's safe, go make your self a cuppa sit down and enjoy it even go for a walk around your yard. Once your had some time out go and check on her.
When Lycan didn't want to sleep at that age i would put him in his buggie and take out for a walk aroundthe streets, the fresh air seemed to do the trick cos he would sleep for 3 hours and when he woke he was a happy bubba....and that way i got some fresh air as well...Might be something you can try if your up to it....Hope today is better for you
