Topic: New Baby Checklist Advice Please Posted: 22 October 2013 at 5:00pm |
Can anyone advise what items are a must to buy for a new baby? Sort of like a Checklist...Eg... What clothes, types of nappies, etc?

There are lots if you look on line, here are a few examples. Baby City, Baby Factory, Oh Baby, Kid Spot. What you do and don't buy and how much you want to spend really comes down to the individual though.

I'd go for, a safe place for baby to sleep (cot, bassinet, hammock, co-sleeper, in your bed IF you look up how to create a safe co-sleeping environment). Bedding, at least 2 sets in case 1 gets puked on. Clothes: enough stretch-and-grows, onesies etc for the season to create layering. You need at least 8 sets. The all in ones, with domes/legs etc are easiest to use! A carseat if you have a car or are planning on using a car at any point. I would go for a wrap/ sling/ Soft structured carrier over a pram, this will also ensure baby gets to snuggle up with you lots while you can still do things around the house as you wish and get out and about if you want too. Nappies, at least 24 of whichever sort most appeals to you of cloth nappies, or about 80 newborn disposable nappies to last the first week or so and then buy as needed, you'll start figuring out how much your individual baby needs. If you're breastfeeding then some nice bras/BFing singlets are nice to have and if you go with singlets is easy to put any top over it in the colder months to just pull up while the BFing bra part of the singlet clips down covering you up nicely while enabling you to see how your latch is going. If planning on formula feeding or feeding with donor milk then you will need bottles, to arrange for formula or donor milk, something to clean bottles with and a steriliser or sterilising agent of some sort.
I think that's about it, you don't really need too much for a baby, a lot of extras is just rampant consumerism and not really necessary. Sleeping place, clothes, something to carry baby in, something for car, something for babies bottom and something to feed the baby.

Definitely some great checklists available. For me I'd say the key points are: - Cot (bassinette is lovely but realistically depending on how big baby is they may only be in there for a very short time - I like the convenience of being able to move a bassinette out to lounge during day but definitely not a 'must have') - Pram (for me I had a sling but didn't use it at all, front pack I only used for hiking which wasn't a lot, a pram was great for going for walks and also for middle of the night 'why won't my baby sleep' moments when you can pop them in the pram and roll it over the edge of carpet/lino bump for vibration) - Clothes, don't go overboard with nb sizing, I'd say at least 1/2 dozen onesies, couple of pants/jackets, a hat or two, few pairs of socks & mittens. Depends on season. My son born in January lived in onesies/singlets and nappy during the day and being wrapped a lot of the time meant only really needed extra layers when going out. - Carseat/capsule - Bouncer was lifesaver for us, we just had a very basic model - Blanket/mat for floor time - nappies (budget on about 8 a day initially) - wipes - lots! - baby wash & powder (I loved curash) - sanitary pads & breast pads for you - a good sense of humour! You'll either laugh or cry a LOT during those first few weeks. Good luck!

I got my checklist from the warehouse website.my sister in law and I both had a copy as I am living in the far north (not many babyshops) and she lives in Auckland so she bought a lot for us. The checklist is nice to have but you won't need everything it says on there. We thought about all our purchases.
