I'm completely overwhelmed when it comes to choosing a cot, so I'd love some advice!

We're currently tossing up between either a:

- Touchwood Chateau http://www.touchwoodcots.co.nz/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=5&PHPSESSID=l43hb4frqq4n7m80vf398poln1

Or a:

- Genesis Arizona http://www.genesisfurniture.co.nz/Our-Products/Nursery-Products/Cots/Arizona-Cot/

Touchwood cots seem amazing - although hideously expensive, particularly with the mattress being additional. Are they worth the cost?

Genesis cots seem to offer similar features, for about half the price. But are there any downsides because of that?

I'm rather reluctant to buy a cot second-hand - it's definitely something I'd personally feel much more comfortable buying brand new.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks heaps

I don't have either but wanted to offer my thoughts

The second one Genesis has wheels, but I guess you could take those off?

The first one Touchwood has solid ends- so I guess it depends on what you like- solid ends or rails/slats?

Both have sides that go down- so that's good if that's what you want?

Just to make things even more tricky- maybe, or maybe not- I have this one:

http://www.mocka.co.nz/sleep-1/baby-cots/mocka-amalfi-cot.html

And Fergus likes it- the slats/rails on the side are a safe distance apart, Fergus can see out of it, it's white and clean looking- modern and funky.

Which I guess is why I like the Genesis type better than the Touchwood from the two you like- it just looks more modern.

This probably wasn't even helpful at all!

We too have the Mocka one. I purely went for looks and when choosing the cot lol!
Here we go again, another baby on it's way!

We've got the Genesis Arizona - actually, until recently we had two of them. They are lovely cots and I don't think there are any down sides to them being cheaper. (The wheels are handy btw for when your 18 month old discovers at 10 at night that he can use his feet to kick the wall and be annoying!) At the end of the day if cost is not a consideration, just buy the one you like the most :-D. (Both of mine were 2nd hand and in mint condition, we just got new mattresses.)

Touchwood cots are great. We bought ours second-hand off trademe for around $300. Think they're made in NZ. Have been very happy with it. It's nice and big and the wood is pretty good quality too.

Genesis cots are made in NZ- one of the very few companies to still do this- so the advantage would be that you can contact the manufacturer directly with any questions etc. We have a Genesis Buckingham cot bought off trademe and it certainly seems nice and solid.

Wow, this is great - thanks so much!!

Having talked to DH last night, I think we're going to hold off for now and decide once she's here (although it would be sensible to take advantage of all the cot sales on at the moment!) We've bought a Cariboo bassinet, so at least she'll have something to sleep in when she arrives!

TeacherLady - I agree, the Mocka cot is gorgeous! I do quite like the idea of a convertable and drop-side, but it's always good to add another option to the list :)

I guess as long as a cot meets all the NZ safety standards then basically it's purely done on looks.

We also have a mocha one, the aspiring one. Really like that it doesn't have drop sides which i am more comfortable with regarding safety and ease of use. I read stories about babies getting trapped by broken drop sides and at least that is one less thing to worry about. As far as I know it can be converted to a toddler bed by buying an extra part. And it was really cheap compared to any other cot. We looked at the touchwood cot and it is really well built but we felt that it was just way too expensive new for a cot and we didn't want to buy the cot second.

Yep the Mocka cots can be converted to toddler beds. I hear from people getting fingers jammed with drop down sides etc so didn't want one either. Never missed it!

Ahh, I can say that the drop-side was fantastic when I was pregnant and DS was still in his cot, there was no way I could have laid him back down in there when he was sleepy - might be a concern to some, but not others. :-D

We have the conversion set up already for when Ferg is ready.

Oh, I didn't realise the Mocka one could convert - that's fantastic!

Thanks everyone!
