Topic: Transferring from Hospital. Posted: 21 March 2009 at 5:10pm |
Here you lot may know the answer to this.
Matt and I are in the middle of a debate at the moment about when the next sprog comes along (and i'll be having a CS again) Is it the law that I have to transfer to another facility after hospital or can I have recovery at home.
Now, as far as I can see, there is no reason why I shouldnt be allowed to spend my night in the hospital after the surgery then come on home to my own bed where my MW can visit me every day to do checks.
He said you have to go to another facility and spend your 4 days recovering (my god what a joke that is).
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I will not be BF, so theres no problem with baby trying to latch etc etc. If the surgery is straight forward and theres no problems with the wound then I should be alright. MW comes from town to visit at the other facility anyway, so its no biggie.
I thought us ladies were supposed to have rights in this sort of situation.. hell, it is our bodies and all!

I'm not sure of the answer because of the c-section, but I had Natalie at 10pm, and was at home by lunchtime the next day. My MW even suggested we come home the same night, but we decided to stay because of the mess!
so i guess it comes down to how complicated your birth is, and how mobile etc you are?
eta: although with a second bub, it might be worth camping out in the hospital to get some rest!

AFAIK they cannot make you stay at the hospital.
I would just make sure that Matt takes some time off work to help you especially with already having a toddler.

its not law hun.............you can go home when your ready and once doc has checked you out...obviously if there is a reason you need to stay in you will.......you cant transfer to a home either if you have complications...........my friend was out the next day after hers......................mine was emergency with complications so i was there a month before i get released to my mum as she was a nurse..........they also (i just found this out) get a district nurse to come see you or they are suppose to...........obviously cause mum was a nurse they felt she could do everything............with my next if i do have a c then i really dont think i will stay the 5 days your allowed but who knows.............i may enjoy time out from the boys

Oh nice. Yea Matt works from home so that wont be a problem. But thats something to think about - we're not considering having anymore for another couple of years anyway. My career is just starting back up so I want to work for a bit first :D

I had James Tuesday morning and went hom Friday morning. I was ready to go home Thursday but it would have meant DH taking more time off work. They wanted me to stay another couple of nights but my OB was happy for me to plead my case to her.

I'm guessing they want to monitor you for complications and make sure everything is working as it should be. Negotiation from the start is always a good strategy. I'm sure you won't leave if things are not good but even still, they may make you sign a "discharging against medical advice" if you leave within a certain number of hours of the birth (i.e. less than their standard admission time).
