Topic: Traveling with Kids Posted: 07 August 2008 at 2:02pm |
Just wondering if you can give me some advise on traveling with kids. We are planning a family holiday next year in April to attend a wedding on the Gold Coast. Once that is over we are carrying on to Sydney and then on to Melbourne and home again. Anyway i was just wondering what things do i need to take......ie- Carseat/booster, pram.....or is it easier to hire everything over there?
I would be grateful for any advise/tips any of you could offer me. The trip is a while away yet but id like to start getting some idea of what is needed to make the trip as easy as i can on the kids....by then i will have a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old baby....

I'm lucky coz Mum and Dad have portacots, carseats etc.
Are you staying with family or in a hotel/motel? If with family, does someone have a portacot you can borrow? If in a hotel/motel they should have some, you just need to request one when you make your bookings.
If you're hiring a car you can get carseats with it, otherwise you'll need to take your own, and it's probably easier/cheaper to take your own buggy. Depending who you fly with most airlines let you take one item of baby equipment free and the rest counts in your weight allowance, baby will get 10kg and Lycan will get 20kg so between you you should have plenty of allowance to cover it all.

We heading to Gold coast as well in about 7 weeks so Josh will be 8 1/2 months. Im borrowing this car seat thing my mate has its just a board thing with a harness that attaches to the seat with the seatbelt which i figure will be fine since josh is soo big and we wont be in a lot of cars over there just heading into GC from Brissy and back. Taking our own stroller.
My concern is with the formula can i take a couple of tins over for while we are there or is it like other foods and i wont be able to take it through customs? Also jars of baby food what is the deal with them? Should i take some (if im allowed) or buy them over there?
Sorry to jump in this thread is just of interest to me as well

You can take your pram with you - just goes on over sized luggage so ask for a loan airport one or take a front/back pack to carry baby in (both best as some times they can't locate the loan ones or ran out)
We were lucky enough to borrow on both trips (thanks emma's parents for the loan of the gremlins portacot and carseat - life savers! )
If your not lucky enough - I would say what Emma had suggested. there are hire places but depending where you are staying you coulduse theirs.
You said on the gold coast you are going to a wedding - if you have friends over there do they know anyone who you can borrow one off?

If you are only going for a week or so i would suggest taking enough to last you - in your check in luggage (not in your carry on - just take enough to last you a flight and a couple more just incase of delays)
ETA: when we went to Uk when RHyley was 4 months old we just used what was over there... he was fine with the swapping. But we went for 7 weeks

Take baby food for the flight a some in your check in - till you get some at the local supermarket. I had no trouble giving RHyley food in the places we went.
They are a lil morre lax on baby stuff - as in limits - as long as you don't go over board they let you take it on board (sometimes more that the 100mls limit)

WRX, they stock the same formula as here. i rang the helpline on the back of the formula when we went over (DS was 15 weeks). So depends on where you are staying and if you know there is a supermarket on the way to the hotel. I took my open can of formula over there and then brought a new one when that one ran out.

thanks for the help everyone i just checked my tin and it is made in oz haha. Do you think i would be allowed 3 bottles of 240ml cooled boiled water on the plane (assuming they have a microwave on the plane or DP will be sitting on a bottle to warm it)? or should i just take the bottles and get them to fill them as i need them (i hate waiting for the water to cool tho)?
Its just we need to be there 2 hours before the flight then its a 3 hr flight then coming through customs and taxi-ing to Gold Coast thats like 7 hours all up if everything runs to time so its more likely knowing my luck that we will be delayed and we are travelling over tea time which is when Joshua wants to eat/drink the most
Man there is so much to think about

I never had a problem taking water for the gremlins bottles, which is completely ridiculous - it's OK to have water for babies bottles but not for me to drink? Duh! If I was a terrorist I'd stick stuff in baby bottles!
But if they make you ditch the water you can always get the flight crew to give you water. At 7 mths Josh will be fine with either bottled or tap if you can't get boiled water. They don't have microwaves on board but will heat a bottle in a jug of hot water for you. Make sure you ask them before you need it tho coz it can take aaaaages for them to bring it back.
