Topic: Troubleshooting Avent bottles? Posted: 10 April 2007 at 8:00pm |
I'm a bit stumped on this one. I've been using the same bottles since the gremlins were about 6 weeks old and they've always been fine. About two weeks ago I replaced all their sz3 teats coz they were scummy with sz4's. Ever since I have had problems with the bottles leaking around the teat, sometimes to the point where bubs ends up drowning in milk. It seems to help if I tighten the lid as tight as I possibly can but that slows the flow of milk right down.
Has anybody else had this problem? I'm really beat as to what's causing it. Do I need to replace the bottles as well? I always thought bottles lasted forever it was just teats that had to be replaced?

I use a mixture of avent and TT closer to nature bottles. I haven't had that prob yet, but was going to go to the supermarket tomorrow to upgrade to next number teat. I'll let you know how I go.
Sorry this reply has been no help to you.
I hope you have some good bibs!!!

These teats are brand new too. Maybe there is a faulty batch? I'm not even sure who to call here to find out?

yep must be faulty teats. If you have time, (yeah right i know). Take the bottle and teats down to the baby factory or wherever you got them and explain the problem. Maybe you could tell them over the phone. Maybe the teats are made for a newer version of the bottle?

Maybe? Coz I bought half of the bottles second hand off Jax so they might be older.
The problem with taking them to the BF is that would mean having them all empty, and the gremlin creatures wouldn't stand for that!

I had the same problem, and still do sometimes. It is to do with how tight the teats are placed on the bottle. My girlfriend pointed it out as she had the same prob about 8 years ago! I still get it wrong sometimes and Tyrell ends up wearing the bottle rather than drinking it!

We have had the same thing happen and all we do is twist the teat around a little and it seems to stop the leaking.
I don't know if it will work for you but worth a shot!

Yeah we sometimes have that problem too. Although they start leaking as we are shaking them to mix the formula so it generally doesn't end up soaking bubs! I find taking it apart and putting the teats back in again fixes it? Funnily enough I think it started when we changed to the number 4's aswell

Might be "user error" Emma
Ours sometimes leaked when we were shaking them up after putting the powder in. We just twist the top around a notch and it seems to drop down and then secure better. It's always happend for us no matter what teats we use.
Btw - ours are old second hand bottles as well and this is the only "problem" I've ever had.

We had the same problem wth avent bottles when I went up to size 4 teats mainly when shaking to mix formula but also soaking Piper when she was feeding and found sometimes just re-screwing the lid back on worked but not all the time so I have started trying some cheaper tommee tippee bottles and have had no problems with leaking so far

I wonder if maybe it's a sz 4 teat thing then? I do fiddle with the teats and it fixes the problem but it's still annoying! Especially as Kelpa said coz they're not exactly cheap!

We had the same problem with Sz3 teats. The sz4's seem to be fine. Hubby seemed to have a huge problem with it, and I never did .. until one day.
Anyway, as someone mentioned above (and in my experience) it seems to be when you insert the teat into the 'lid' ... sometimes they don't seem to 'seal' properly. If it spouted everywhere, I'd undo the whole thing, give the teat a harder pull and then re-screw. Seemed to work.

I had a similar prob with Ashlyn & the only thing I could put it down to (after I had checked the fitting) Ashlyn wasn't a particularly strong/efficient sucker, didn't have much success with breast feeding, just wondering if the flow of milk may be a bit fast and the gremlins havn't adjusted yet. When the lids are on as normal there is breaks in the thread on the lid to allow air in to allow for a smooth drink, baby doesn't have to stop drinking to allow air in through teat, so when you tighten the lid a bit more there is less room for air to move so slowing down flow. Maybe there will just be an adjustment period?

There gremlins certainly don't have a suck problem - they're little limpets, they cling on for dear life . But could well be user-error (ie. me!)
