Topic: ttc#1 - 8 months... Vitex? Posted: 01 March 2010 at 9:40am |
i am TTC#1 .. have been trying for almost a year now with no luck.. having issues with short LP (LP 8 days, AF starts D22/23) and have been taking a vitex tincture for almost 2 months now... 1st month with vitex worked a charm, cycle went out to 28 days,... am in the 2nd month now, today being day 22 and think AF is starting (have had some discharge this morning, light & watery, and normal cramp/aches have started) has anyone else used vitex tincture, has it worked and how long did it take to work?!

hi there em....I had a short LP too and have been taking vitex for about 3 months...but what worked best and first to lengthen my cycle was vitamin B6...are you taking that? Oh and Im taking the vitex tablets not the tincture.
Hope things get sorted soon for you and you get that magic BFP

thanks Tarns!
haven't tried the VB6 but after reading several forums this morning think i should give it a go!
vitex tablets didn't work for me at all.. took them for 3 months .. so my naturopath started me on a stronger dose of vitex (mixed with other herbs that i can't remember the name of now, but they taste bad!!)
how do you take the VB6? any suggestions on brand etc?

em, have you been charting or using OPKs to find out which day you ov? I used to have 23 days cycles too, but found out through charting temps that I actually ov'd between CD10-12, giving me a more acceptable LP of 11/12 days most months.
Vitex didnt work for me either, I continued having short cycles so stopped using it.

yep, have been charting.... OV day 14, AF day 22-23 so only 8-9 days LP...
1st month using the vitex tincture worked so really got my hopes up! LP was out to 14 days, but this month only 9 days... however, temp was quite high on day 14 this cycle, so possibly no OV this time?
have had day 21 progesterone blood test done, level was at about 16 which i'm led to believe is okay...
So VB6 worked & vitex didn't? i would tend to believe you considering you have had short LP & 2 babies!!!

hehe I have one baby ...just buy B6 the chemist or take a B complex...you probably want to be taking about 50mg per day of B6. I reckon its awesome...gotta love the B6
So you definitely should join us in the charting thread since you are halfway there already! Babykat is a charting girl too

Hi all, I'm another short LP girl and am about to start taking Vitex tomorrow - hoping it will work. If not, may move on to B6. Good luck to everyone. Guess I will head over to the charting thread too!

Brizzle - I think I'd try b6 before vitex.... vitex is quite a strong herbal remedy and lots of people seem to be able to solve LP probs with b6 alone

I spoke to my naturopath about vitex vs vb6 ... vitex is taken to increase progesterone (which needs to be reasonably high to allow the egg to implant during post ovulation phase) and vb6 is for oestrogen (which you need more of when progesterone levels are too high)
So be careful which one you take, you might be making the problem worse! I would suggest getting advice before choosing which one..
I am on a vitex tincture at the moment & it has worked, my LP has extended out from 10 days to 14 days... so now keeping my fingers crossed during the 2ww this cycle!!

Hmm thats interesting when B6 is used to lengthen your LP....I would have thought if B6 raised your estrogen levels it would shorten your LP and bring on AF.
How's the 2ww going?
ETA....maybe you got that the wrong way round Em? B6 is used to correct Luteal Phase Defect (lack of progesterone)

I was taking vB6 and that helped a little for me too and then I went to a naturopath and got herbs from her and acupuncture and that worked even better (and resulted in a baby). But if the vitex has extended it out to 14 days already that's awesome!! Sometimes it takes a few cycles to work - I remember I stopped taking it, I think it made me feel depressed from memory.

I had a luteal phase defect and used Vitex (capsules). It regulated my cycles fantastically and I fell pregnant in under 4 months (after taking 2 years to conceive my daughter).

I am seeing a naturopath fertility specialist. I was on vitex for 5 months, did didly squat for my short LP, infact it did absolutely nothing at all for me.
However, I am now on vit B6 and reprofem spray and last month my LP was 14 days finally!
Fingers crossed for a longer LP this month too!
