Topic: UGLY Posted: 30 June 2008 at 8:50pm |
Just thought I'd share this with you guys... about a month ago, DH and I and our friends went up to Dargaville to work with some 14 year old students from the highschool, to help them make a short film. Through 1914media trust, we ran a competition for the students to write a short story about issues youth face today. One of those stories was turned into a screenplay, and 6 students were chosen to make it, helped by 1914media. These students had no previous experience of film making.
The students found the locations, did the casting, props, lighting, camera, directing, sound, editing etc.
It's about 12 minutes long but trust me, it's worth seeing til the end. Oh and a couple of the kids wrote/performed the song at the end too. It's in 2 parts (cos we could only upload max 10 mins to youtube at once), so make sure you watch them both!
Click on the link to watch the film (yep, it's called "UGLY")... be warned, you may need to have tissues ready (well I know I did).
UGLY
I'm interested to know your (honest) thoughts on it too, cos perspective is so different when you're so involved in the production etc... thanks

Really really moving. I did need the tissues
Makes you think...esp when you are raising a daughter. As someone who really struggles with perceived pressure to be physically perfect, it scares me to imagine my girl going through the same struggles. But how do we stop the cycle? Our society is so fixated on all the wrong things.
The film is really well done,

It is a true issue with teenager especially but with all people not just the youth...
For example - Brooke jumped on the scales tonight and said - 'LEts see how fat i am' Now if anyone has seen the photos of my brooke she is far from fat... and i am one to blame as i always say 'does mummy look fat'...
But back to the movie well done. Real issues that effect real people
And love the song at the end What a talented bunch of kids

Awesome film. Cool resolution too Much more serious and thoughtful (and hopeful!) than anything I could have come up with at school

That was really well done.
The song at the end was lovely. Have you got a copy of the lyrics?

One thing that I have to say about the song is the lyrics "most beautifulest" (or whatever it was... can't remember now)
But then that's the decline in the english language for ya... and unfortunately most songs (written by adults!) have terrible english.

Thanks guys - yeah I thought it was flippin awesome, but you know how it's different when you're so involved! I really appreciate the feedback
Request from DH: It would be awesome if you guys had the time comment on the youtube link, so that the kids can read it and know what people think of their film. Click on the linky UGLY on youtube
Nikki lol yeah it was "the prettiest people do the most ugliest things", not the best English
Bel, how funny you know Karen! Yeah she owns Subway in Dargs. She was great coming on board to be in it, the whole film really involved the community people and places.
MamaPickle, here's the lyrics to the song...
The prettiest people do the most ugliest things
Pretty chains and diamond rings
To have a good life she thinks she's got to cover up what's inside
But baby girl, you're already beautiful
Bright red lipstick and mascara too
Baby girl, you know it just aint you
Remove the makeup, let your hair hang loose
Cos you're so beautiful when you're just being you
