Hi,

paranoid first time mum here.

My ds normally only has one poo a day (and its usually an explosion) since this time yesterday every nappy has been a pooy one and i'm just a bit concerned.

Nothing has changed in his diet at all, he isn't feeding any more. Not every nappy has masses in it or anything, its just a change, he is a bit grizzly, but still eating and slept well last night.

Is it something or nothing, if he had an upset stomach would it be more obvious, sorry it that sounds dumb.

I'm probably not going to be much help as I haven't had a 4 week old for nearly 9 years....eek...I've got all these worries to look forward to hehe

Anyway....you haven't mentioned if he's breast or bottle fed. So I'm wondering if he's breast fed, is there anything at all that you have eaten in the last couple of days that you hadn't previously in the past 4 weeks?
If he's bottle fed, are you making sure everything is thoroughly washed and then sterilised?

Hmmm what else? Oh, has he been around anyone that had been sick in the 2 weeks before seeing him? I say 2 weeks, because some of the tummy bugs can take that long to pass on, an also to show signs in the new patient.

Like I said, not too sure this has helped, but I hope he feels better soon :)

Oooh a potential yes to all the above;

He is mainly breast fed with a bottle of either ebm or formula tops ups as we go, depending on how hungry he is.

As for what I have eaten, I wondered about that.

We were near a 5 month old a couple of days ago with a bad cold.

We sterilise everything my husband is a fanatic about it, but i guess you can never guarantee it.

Well hopefully because your husband is a fanatic about the sterilising then hopefully its not that. I would imagine if its not done, then he'd be sicker??
Hopefully its just something you have eaten and everything will go back to normal soon :)

I guess thats kind of what i was thinking, something has obviously changed but i would have thought if it was a bug or something he would be sicker.

Just got to think what on earth i have eaten.

It can be something simple like too much chocolate, or cheese or orange juice. For Joel its chocolate, I can have a little bit but more than about 4 little squares in a day is enough to give him lots of poo!!

Also, just because he is going once a day at the moment doesn't mean it will last, he may not poo for a  week or more and thats normal for a BF baby too. Joel went about 8 days then exploded for about 4 naps, now sometimes there is a little bit, sometimes a lot (out the bottom and top!!) and sometimes there is nothing just wee.

some days we have a pooey nappy every nappy change, other days it's only once or twice a day (and other babies I know only go once a week!) - BF babies can change their habits on a whim! (as long as everything else seems to be ok, i wouldn't worry about it)

Fi - what Finley has been doing since this time yesterday sounds exactly like what Bethany has done since the day she was born!! If he seems out of sorts then maybe it's a prob, but otherwise maybe it's just his system going through some changes or something? Just a thought

Well who knows but he seems happier this afternoon and we are no longer getting poo in every nappy. I was concerned as it seemed very watery too, i have had foods I have not had for a while, kidney beans, avocado, cream so i guess it could be anything.

Midwife is coming over later so will just check it with her, but maybe its all very nomal.

It actually sounds kinda normal to have fits and starts of it. The unsettledness may just be that he doesn't like a dirty nappy or he is also growth spurting. I'd ride with it for a day and see what happens. Remember to keep him well hydrated on hot days.
