Topic: Using Sippy Cup Posted: 07 August 2007 at 9:57am |
When was your little one able to drink from their own sippy cup / bottle independently? i.e. hold it and tip it?
Elle is 11.5mths and still doesn't really drink anything other than breastmilk (2 or 3 feeds per day). If I put her sippy cup in front of her she will play with it but doesn't know how to tip it up to drink from it. She'll just chew the handle then throw it on the floor.
She seems to still need me for everything...she can't get anywhere on her own, can't really even pull to stand on her own, can't have a drink herself etc etc. I'm hoping she'll learn some of these simple skills soon!

My other girls learnt the sippy cup at about 10-11mos (when I weaned them). Kryssi was given a sippy cup about a week ago and has got the gist although heaps gets spilled down her front lol. Have you tried putting your hand over Elle's and pouring it into her mouth that way? Also our sippy cup has a drip-stopper thing which requires a very different suction to breast. I found it was best to introduce the cup without that and add it later when they had sorted it all out. (Once they know what the cup is for, then they can work for it )

Ella holds her bottle...and last few days has been moving her hand to the bottom to tip the last bit out. She has three bottle feeds a day (most of time now except when we are sick of course ) and two boobie feeds - one morning and one night, altho she sometimes comes back for a second boobie feed in morning before her first nap.
I bought some sippy cups in oz ready and am going to get some handle ones as think she will be ready for those very very soon
have to say tho - try the sippy cups yourself- some are way too hard for an adult to suck eaily let alone a bubba....so try and see if they flow ok etc

She can drink from it if I hold it (but she doesn't like water or juice), it's just that she won't tip it for herself....

Rhyley has held his and goes ok until he accidently pulls it out then it goes everywhere (this is the bottle) I could not leave him to feed himself as hes not that good at holding it and knowing what to do. Sippy cups, I did have an avent one that I got free but he just laughed at me and chewed the spout so nothing came out. So I got one with a silicon spout - still spill free - but comes out alot easier and alot like a teat (but not) so he gets drinks out of that easier although he still doesn't drink properly out of it.

I'd like her to learn to tip it as it seems most babies her age can but I also worry about her fluid intake. She takes 2 or 3 breastfeeds a day but has pretty much rejected my right side and hence usually just takes 1 side now. I guess a lot of her food is water based...
She's been so cranky again this week and I'm wondering if the lack of fluid contributes. I know I feel horrid if I'm dehydrated.

Isla had one of those purple watties/plunket ones I think it is,..with hard spout,..nope wouldnt have a bar of that. But got the hang of useing her Tomee Tippee Nuby handle one with silicon spout real quick. Hadnt like water before that either. Now she deinks a whole cup full over the day.

When I weaned Hannah I got her onto the cup by giving her diluted cordial. I wonder if you put Elle in the highchair, sipped her a bit of her drink, and then left it on the highchair while you organised dishes/dinner, she would figure it out for herself? Some kids need a gentle push towards independence

We have a sippy cup from supermarket, think it is a Tommee Tippee (sp?) Tyrell would always have to have the bottle full to start with as he didn't get the gist of it all.
I then thought I would try a bottle with a straw in it.....no way. Maybe give that a go...you are welcome to our one, used once! LOL
Sippy cup will come when she is ready. Leave it lying around and when she wants it she will let you know.

We've got the same Nuby ones as Kellz, and the gremlins know *how* to use them, if I put formula in them they guzzle it back, but if I give them to them with water in they pretend they don't know what to do with them. Yet they'll take water from a bottle no problems.
Funny, funny babies!

We tried SO many sippy cups, as Emma Rose wasn't terribly interested in anything but her bottle, and the only advice I can give is to give it time. It took her a long time to get the hang of tipping the sippy cup up to get the liquid out of it, and now that she's got that skill down, she now doesn't understand that the ones with the straw don't need to be tipped back, so she tips those as well and gets mad when nothing comes out. Does Elle take breastmilk or water from a bottle at all? I wonder if it would be worth trying her on a bottle til she gets the hang of tipping it back, then weaning her on to a sippy cup?
As for the question of dehydration, if she's only taking one side and only doing two to three breastfeeds a day, she may not be getting enough liquid. Does she have lots of very wet nappies? Is her poop hard and dry or soft and peanut-buttery? (Gross, I know!!!) At her age, the minimum recommended milk intake is about 350ml -- but or course it's hard to know how much she's getting if she's only taking it from the breast.
And I'm sorry to say that the throwing the cup on the floor thing doesn't stop any time soon -- Emma Rose still does it at 18 months -- I think it's become her way of telling me she's finished! LOL

Lots of wet nappies but she has had constipation issues (goes most days but it is awefully hard) since 4mths old. She was still on 7 feeds a day at at point. We give her prunes and herbal stuff which helps but her poos are still hard. I try to get as much liquid in as I can so guess that is all I can do.

I guess it depend on the bub and hopefully with her seeing it around will make her interested in it. I tried Alize with the mini pump bottles and he loves it. I only open it half way so its not drowning him, but he does get a little wet so a bib is def needed. He also wont take any baby bottle at all but yet he takes a sippy cup with water by himself. Last Friday My mum tried him with EBM in a bottle and he just didnt know how to use it

6months, Haleigh had been dfrinking water from her sippy cup from 3months and at 6months she learnt how to drink form it without it spilling everywhere, she prefer pump bottles but loves her nospill cup of water to take to bed every night. We use the winnie the pooh ones at babyfactory cause Haleigh hated tommee tippee ones.
Haleigh still throws her cup around esp if I give her water whne she wants milk or milk if she wants water so now I have a cup of each waiting for her in the fridge hehe.
