After having a sore back for four weeks, i finally went to the doctor to find out I have a UTI?kidney infection. she gave me some codeine and some antibiotics - this was on friday. she said I should be fine in five days. so today is day three and i have had NO change at all. Pain is the same (codiene does eff all). So the question is - has anyone had a UTI - how long dis it take to go away. Comtemplating going back to the doctor but if you know palmy - getting an appointment is hard and I already have one for Thursday should I need more - wait or another appointment?

Hi there Lizzle,

What anitbiotics were you prescribed?

I quite often get UTIs that go into kidney infections and notice within 24 hrs on antibiotics a definate relief from symptoms.
It may have really set in, I would ring the practice nurse at your GPs and ask whether you need to go in sooner and they may need to double book you or fit you between other patients.

Yeah I have had UTIs that turn to kidney infections and usually get relief after a day of antibiotics... I would go back to the doctor, or at least ring them and see what they say.

I feel for you - kidneys infections suck big time!

First of all did they do a culture test? Like in took a midstream urine sample, sent it off to a lab?

It sounds like a UTI but it might be caused by different things. And the antibiotic might not be suitable towards the UTI you are actually having at the moment.

I suggest you go back to the Dr and say that it aint better ect.

Natural things that help: Cranberry juice but try the unsweetened ones, Cranberry tablets, Drinking loads and loads of water and go to the chemist and ask for a urine alcaniser. That will help as well.

update: rang the nurse this morning who told me to come in. Did another sample which is being sent to the lab. and have new antibiotics - which disagree with me a tad - and am going in for an x-ray tomorrow at the hospital. hoping they find the problem - or that it magically disappears.

Ouch!
You poor lady.
I'm really susceptible to those. Had a few doozies.
Antibiotics, for me, usually kick in within 24 hours and 72 hours later I'm pretty much pain-free.

I'm glad you're getting more testing

In the mean time, as others have said, plenty of fluids and rest
Oh, and I find Ural to be really good.

Keep us posted

Usually the culture should be able to tell them what sort of bacteria is growing so they can target it specifically. Broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefaclor and Flucloxacillin tend to work OK, but some infections are resistant to them.

I usually take Noroxin (Norfloxacin), it's only a 2-day course but seems to work pretty well.

Did you have your bladder and kidneys x-rayed? Hope the results are useful - I was gonna say hope they are clear but then that doesn't really solve your problem of not knowing!

well, it's been a confusing time. I realise this may be boring to most of you, but hey, venting makes me feel better.

Update on me: still taking antibiotics for two more days and am feeling much better, but still sore.
Rang nurse and she saiod my urine test was clear - which means no kidney infection. so why am i still sick and sore???? can't wait til x-ray comes back and shows what is going on, or pain goes away and I can be normal!

Ugh! I hope the pain settles down! I feel your pain, I have interstitial cystitis and it is a PITA, I often get "symptoms" but no infection.

Have you done a pg test?

I ask because the first time I went to the doc with a UTI I complained of a sore back and he said "when a woman complains of a sore back, 90% of the time she's either pregnant or has a UTI" - I was 19 at the time and was very releived to be diagnosed with a UTI
But if they've cleared the UTI and you've STILL got the sore back...
