Just a query, I've been eating quite a bit of crappy stuff lately, McD's, butter chicken, muffins and the like. I've been keeping track of my weight and was a little worried because I seemed to be gaining a little too much (almost a kilo a week lately!).

I've started being a bit healthier and upping my fruit and vege and cutting out the McD's and butter chicken, snacking on rice crackers and salsa instead of muffins, that sort of thing.

I discovered this morning that I've lost almost 1/2kilo! Should I be worried? I'm still eating plenty and I'm not starving myself or dieting but I was still a little worried to see weight come off. I just wanted to make sure I didn't keep gaining too much.

Nah Paws I don't think you should worry if you know you're just eating better.

I worry that I haven't put on enough (3kgs so far) but then again I still have ages to go and will probably blow up by the end...

People have commented that I am small for my pregnancy, but I was already overweight before I got pregnant so maybe they think I look just as fat!! haha

I made the mistake of getting on the scales today, when I stopped at my mum's to use the loo. I've gained near 10kgs already !!!!!!!! I think I'm just going to fill my lunchbox full of fruit and yoghurt from now on and make sure I drink 3L of water (I go pee so much anyway it doesn't matter). I hopped on, waited for it to register, looked down and went WOAH ! Am quite annoyed, but maybe it's just the mood I'm in. I mean, I don't want to intentionally lose weight, I know it's dumb as bricks to even think about dieting during pregnancy... but it's a bit like what Paws has done, will change my eating habits back to a healthier plan I think. *sigh* It was fun indulging for a while I guess

Hey PAWS its interesting you asked that I just chatted with my midwife about that exact thing yesterday! I have put on about 5kg in all since I found out, and I am not far behind you. She said ideally by 20 weeks i would have put on only 3kg! So I asked what i should do and she said not to panic but definately cut out the junk and eat more fruit and veg. And i said what if i lose weight? and she said that wont be a problem if i lose weight but am eating a sensible balanced diet even if i lose weight the baby will take what it needs. She said to think of the baby as a leach and that it sucks everything it wants from you before your body even gets the chance,so the only side effect is that I might feel a bit tired. And she said if I lost a kilo or 2 that was no prroblem as long as i was eating healthy I could be assured that it was fat my body would be shedding and that the baby wasnt suffering. SHe said plenty of fruit and veg, cut out the refined sugars and carbs, eat mostly whole wheat carbs that are not highly processed.

ANyway I am going to start eatin healthier and smaller portions now and she said no problem. And she said if you are not growing right your midwife will know and let you know. But be sensible.

Dont feel bad though, I have been a devil since i found out. chippies, chocolates, MacDonalds, anything fried, and jellybeans!!! I have done it too!

I've put on about 6.5kgs in total - I think that is from having been so sick with Preggy Nausea. A couple of weeks ago I lost 1kg between two weekly midwfie visits. She wasn't concerned as when she measured my fundal height is had grown 2cm. Everyone is different and my theory is that as long as you are healthy and feel good then there is nothing to worry about!! I really wish I'd been one of the ones who loved food whilst preggy - rather than being one of the ones who vomited everything up

3KG BY WEEK 20????? You have got to be kidding!!!!!

Then again it seems to vary from book to book that you read....I have one that basically says 1-1.5kg per month. Other books I have say different things as well. overall I understood 10-15kg was normal.

I must admit I am feeling better eating healthier which is great. All the same sometimes only carbs fill me up so I'm not sure how I could give those up!

hmmmm yes i thought that was pretty low, I was like REALLLY? ARE YOU KIDDING? but i guess its different for each person. I am the same I just love my carbs! But remember she definatley didnt say give up carbs, carbs are good, just go slow on eth refined white sugary carbs is all.
I have taken the view now that from now on I am putting food in my mouth for baby. And I find it really works for me to think "now would i feed a baby this big box of sugary lollies, or would i feed it a healthy piece of fruit" and when i think of it like that I actually find it hard to eat the rubbish, I feel too guilty, not because of the weight but because I would feel guilty giving a baby rubbish to eat...
It's all about balance. My other idea is to be good during the week and allow myself any treat i want on Sundays. That way at least i get a reward for being good and one treat a week cant hurt!

Yikes when I was pregnant with Alex I went from 70kg prepregnancy to 90kg at 30 weeks
By the time I had him I was over 95kg, it was horrible because I was eating well & my midwife was 100% sure it wasn't retained water because I had no swelling whatsoever until the day I was induced (because of pre-eclampsia). And yet after I had Alex (who accounted for over 4kg of that weight!) it all just MELTED away thanks to breastfeeding (I had enough milk for triplets) and within a couple of months I was down to 65kg
So far I'm up to 80kg, still eating really well....except for coca-cola.....I've tried & tried to quit but I always disappoint myself after watching my fiancee scull down a big glass of it

Wow you are lucky to have only gained 3 kg at 20 weeks. I am just about at the 12 week mark and have probably put on about 2 or 3 kgs at the first trimester stage but expect to put on several more kilos during the next 6 months especially if my cravings for food keep getting stronger.

I think I'd gained 2kgs or so by the end of the first trimester, and it has slowly crept up since then. I'm still really disappointed in myself somehow, which I know is a bit stupid since I *have* to gain at least some weight to grow a healthy baby ! Am going hard out on the fruit and water now though, am just mad that there doesn't seem to be much of a variety of fresh fruit during winter aside from apples and bananas (not an orange fan, only eat mandarins). If I can keep my ceiling at 12kgs total I'll be stoked, but we shall see *sigh*

YEAH it's hard I think we are all programmed to think that weight gain is bad - but ofcourse we need to gain weight to grow a baby!

aaahhhhh I am just going to try and be healthy and see what happens ...
