This is so sad, and makes me angry.
What was the mother doing with a 17yr old anyways, and why didn't the neighbours call the police, I mean what did they think a 3yr old was doing on the roof.
And this had been going on for weeks, the mother should be charged, for failing to provide care for her daughter.

The neighbour said she saw the 3 year old on the roof with adults on the ground "taunting her". That's not normal behaviour!!! None of it is!! Putting her in a sandpit while she has things thrown at her. Maybe the alcohol wasn't the only thing in their systems, cos a sane sober person would never do that to a child (one would hope).

It is so heartbreaking isnt it. I really do hope she makes a full recovery and gets put with a loving family who would never allow something like this to happen. Though I suppose she will end up back with her mother...

It makes me really sad and mad thinking about how many other children are out there having things like that getting done to them at the momment

I feel like crying every time i read about this its awful and feel helpless to do anything, i mean if I was a neighbour and saw that happening i wouldn't hesitate to call the police, I even would of gone and got the wee girl (making sure my kids were safe first) I am no brave person by all means but theres no way that I would stand by and let a child go thru that, no matter how many there was there, surely out of all the ppl that were around they could of taleyed round and formed a safe group to get the girl out of harms way??? But alas I was not there to help that little girl.. so sad

heard sheis probably brain damaged. And she should NOT go back to her mother. Shaking up with a 17year old - okay cheep thrills but leavig you kids with him is wrong. He ex was 47 (she was 34) and apparently the 47 was just as abusive, the kid had no chance.

This made me sick to the stomach, DF was to angry towatch the news.
5 people ganging up onto a 3yr old is just not nice.
If i saw my neighbours doing that id call the cops, its not right to jsut sit back when a child is treated liek that.
apparently the neighbours said that they ahd loud music all teh time, probably to drown out the sounds of her screams.
the step fathers father has alot to answer for to being 47 and being a part of the whole thing, what sort of example is he making for his son no wonder he's so screwed in the head.
knowing our stupid nz justuce system they wont be locked away for long, they'll be back out on the streets before you know it, or jsut get off with a light sentence.
maybe they should be given the abuse they put her through and see how they like it.

Me too, BusyMum, and I have never given a mummy cuddle! I am SO angry I am crying about this poor little girl. I am FURIOUS at the neighbours who were happy enough to spill the beans to the news crews, and didn't call the police WEEKS ago - that little girl is damaged FOR LIFE and in my eyes they are as guilty as the people who actually layed hands on her.

Anyone see Christine Rankin on breakfast this morning? Or read the stuff in the Sunday Star Times yesterday? Finally some people fired up about these cases - I hope it won't just stay "talk"....

Something needs to be done.

When I read about this, I just felt sick, there are so many people desperate to have babies and would love them and look after them, if you don't want your child, give it to somebody who does! It is horrible, I just can't imagine how somebody could do this.

I couldn't sleep last night thinking about this poor little girl and what she must have gone through. We as adults can rationlise bad things that happen a wee tot this age can't. DH and I were talking about his at bed time, and he said he has never wanted to hurt someone as much as he wants to go up North and pummel these people. I'm sick of hearing peoples lame excuses as to why they didn't contact police, this never ever needed to go so far!! So often after these incidents like Nia and wee lillybing people come out and say "We thought something was happening, maybe we should have stepped in"!

I don't know what the answer is but somehow we as a nation have to say enough is enough and put a stop to ignorant uncaring people hurting our precious children.

I agree with the lady on 3 news the police and cyps need more power in taking children away, they shouldn't have to wait until the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted. How many times have we been told after an event like this that they were in the system but they couldn't act.

I would rather have a policeman knock on my door and check the safety of my screaming tantrum throwing child, that maybe a neighbour was worried about and go through that inconvenience, than have this happen to another child.

I'm just so haunted by this poor little girl and what she has been through as DH said how can people have such little repect for another human being.

I am absolutely disgusted by this as well. What annoys me is the "PC gone mad" thing we hve happening here, where people won't ring police etc cos it's "none of their business" or they're too scared, and CYFS etc don't step in early enough cos of all the red tape PC nonsence. Another thing that sickens me is the fact that this woman started going out with her partner when he was 15, so that is child abuse as well, and VERY VERY sick. What on earth can a 15 year old boy do for a 30 year old woman???? and she has a whole tribe of other kids (one of whom is older than the boyfriend, or close in age to, anyhow) and most of them live with other family. How on EARTH can a woman let her child be treated like this?????????? man, I feel big time guilty and sad when I yell at Jake, so I can't imagine that. Sick SICK SICK Bar$tards.

I just read a bout the other baby being admitted. They do say that at least one a month are admitted to starship with head injuries from abuse - so sad that NZ is like that, for a small populated country thats a high number... poor babies..

I think thats half the problem, is people don't know who their neighbours are anymore.
When I was little (back in the 70s), my mum knew all the neighbours around our house and across the road. We had a nosey neighbour two doors up who could see into our backyard, and if the ever saw anything going on would ring my mum.
People don't do that these days, it should be everyones business. Who would want to live in a community where the neighbours beat their children.

its true you need to get to know your neighbours. Must admit we know the one next door and a couple across the road but the other side is a young male whose never home so don't have much to do with him although we do know him as its Josh's friends brother..

i agree nobody knows their neighbours anymore.
since growing up in a small town with neighbours so nosey (but nosey in a good way) i have become nosey watchign who comes and goes form my neighbours homes etc. I would hate to think something horrible went on and I knew about it and did nothing.
i miss the neighbour hood watch we ahd in arrowtown and motueka it was great, and made you feel safe.
up here people all keep to themselves i dont know any of my neighbours that ive had up here, except for 2 but only cause we all shared the same driveway.
I think the key is to live in an area where they are all retired people, they seem to be the only areas where ive lived that have had a watch group, ours in motueka even offered to prune our 60 odd rose bushes in our garden
