Topic: What Should I do?! (sensitive subject) Posted: 15 July 2008 at 11:12am |
Hi Ladies
Im not sure if I should be posting in the kiddies and beyond forum instead... But anyhoo...
Last night J stayed at her friends house. Her mother called me at 8pm to say that she had gone to check on the girls to make sure they were asleep and they were both under a blanket. She went and pulled the blanket off and found her daughter with no undies or pants on, and J with no top on. She asked them what they were doing and they both got rather defensive and said "nothing nothing nothing". She wondered what she should do with them both, whether or not to try and talk to them or not. I told her to leave it for the night and I'd talk to J alone tonight and see if she'll tell me what on earth they were doing.
I thought perhaps they were pretending to push babies out, as they both got rather fascinated with babies and pregnancy since I'd had Jackson. Or they could have been investigating, which also scares me a little bit.
What on earth do I do?! She is only 5... Do I just leave it? What should I tell her?

A the age of 5 I doubt they were up to much other than investigating each other, as you say they have both been fascinated with babies and pregnancy etc.
I'm sure I would feel just as uncomfortable about the situation as you are now but I personally wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

I wouldn't worry too much. I can still remember games that we played as little kids "doctors and nurses" and we were just investigating each other. I really doubt at that age it was anything "bad".

I don't think it would be anything bad, I remember being that age and doing the exact same thing with my friends (boys included) and it was just exploring. And as you said they were getting curious after you had Jackson so jsut exploring.

Sounds like "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" kinda thing. I wouldnt make a big deal of it but maybe later on its time for the "your body is yours only" speech????

I can still remember playing those kinds of exploring games when I was that little too.
I wouldn't worry about it either, chances are they're just being curious.

My daughter and her best friend play games like that all the time , its totally innocent and nothing sinister , they are just exploring bodies, and feelings etc.

I would be more inclined to talk to the children about personal space, I know they are kids and comfortable with each other enough to investigate and that is normal but maybe talk about WHO it is ok to show those body parts to (Mummy, Daddy, Grandparents and the Dr). Also maybe using it as an opportunity to see if the other parent wants to do a wee talk on the birds and the bees 5 is old enough for them to start getting interested in more complicated relationships. I think by letting them blindly investigate (love that word in this scenario by the way) without knowledge might be a bummer.

I think it's just an age where little girls (and probably boys too) are naturally curious about bodies. It might be a good time to gently remind your daughter that clothes off is only for her mum/dad/doctor, and clothes on for everyone else. It doesn't have to be blown out of proportion to just get that much across. We recently had a situation with a couple of little girls (friends) who wanted to do the dr thing, but we had to say arms are fine, tummies are not (we ruled out tummies because they were going beyond tummies).

Maya is fascinated with birth and babies atm too, and she seems to know waaaay more than what I've told her! Sounds like a common thread at this age.
