Jackson is all clogged up at the moment. Not quite sure with what, as it doesn't seem to be a cold, but he has a lot of mucous and it sounds like it is in his throat or something.

Anyway, I am trying to feed him and am having problems (surprise surprise). I am not sure if it is related to him being unwell, or if it's another set of tricks he has learnt.

Firstly, he will suck for a minute and as soon as he gets some milk he will pull off. I have tried multiple different holds but he won't stay latched for more than half a minute or so. This can go on and on and on. There's no way to keep him latched - what am I supposed to do?

Occassionally he has stayed latched and looks to be sucking, but there is no swallowing going on. I have pulled him off and squeezed my breast and no milk flows. I know there is milk in there, and a couple of minutes later it will come out again when I squeeze. It's like he's turning if off or something!! The only time he is happy to suck is when nothing is coming out! How is he doing this? He doesn't seem to be chewing, but the suck definately isn't as strong as usual.

Has anyone had this happen when their babies have been unwell? I just don't really know what is going on.... He seems to be hungry but won't eat unless he is REALLY hungry and then he will feed for a very short period.

Breastfeeding does my head in!

he could be pulling off because he's clogged up and having trouble breathing?
have you taken him to the dr to get checked? you can get saline solution from the chemist to go up his nose (couple of drops) which helps to clear it out

just re-read your post and if it's not a clogged nose, then my answer is irrelevant

perhaps take him to the dr to get checked out, for
re-assurance if nothing else

Yeah, I have already taken him to the doctor and am using saline drops. I should have mentioned that!

He seems to be breathing fine when feeding, which is why I don't understand the new habit of pulling off.

Reflux? thats exactly what Ava used to do on the breast (weaning her off it now, so over it). The clogged up sound is part of reflux, as is the pulling off when on the breast. He might be a 'slient refluxer'.

We're still wondering about the reflux, but he definately has something that is making him ill at the moment. He has been spilling mucousy stuff and I am getting some boogers out of his nose.

I called Healthline and spoke to the breast feeding people. She said it could be because his suck isn't very strong that it is not moving the milk down well... hence when I squeeze a couple of minutes later I do then get some. Makes sense I guess.

She said just to feed him frequently until he gets better and then he can sort out any supply issues later.

I hope that works out - there's so much I am trying to achieve with his feeding at the moment, this just feels like another set back! We'll stay positive though and I'll just keep letting him lead the way for now.

I find lil miss always gets fussy when she's a bit snotty, even if she isn't blocked up enough for it to make it hard for her to feed. She did the on and off thing a lot when we were trying to get her back on the breast after she'd been tube fed and it hurt so much!

I wish I had something useful to suggest but I don't really, just wanted you to know that you're not the only one!

The mucousy stuff they spill can be part of reflux, as can the stuffy nose - we have problems with both with Cian and he's got silent reflux. Check out the symptoms oncrying over spilt milk
