"Crockpot Virgin" - You ladies inspired me to use one.
Today, have corned beef and a bottle of ginger ale. Normally do this on stove over 3 hours simmering - is a favourite in our house so will see how goes in crockpot - wish me luck..

Sorry I just came back in here to look up a recipe and realised I hadn't answered a question! Yes really Fliss (and Emma), you don't have to thaw meat before chucking it in the crockpot, you can just throw frozen chicken pieces (for example) in. The only caveat is that they need to be not all in a big lump iygwim (so a whole chicken or roast cut of beef or lamb would be out), and you need to cook it for an hour or two longer. In fact it's a useful trick if you need to put something on that would usually only take 6 hours or so but you need to leave the house for longer, if you use frozen meat then you can cook it for longer without it falling apart.
It was totally new to me, too, until I discovered the "Year of Crockpotting" blog I'm always linking to

I 100% recommend the Chicken Makhani by the way. Better if you double the garam masala though and add some more cayenne pepper and chilli powder to spice it up. If you stick to the recipe it is mild.

Actually not a big cook, but since I am currently a sahm, I think I better get started.
i want to do a sort of vege chilli thingy in the crockpot tonight, I have various veg, tinned toms, tom paste and some chick peas, oh and some chilli.
Anyone give me any idea where to begin, how long it takes etc...........
sorry that probably sounds really dumb!!!!!

Too late now, but try this one I've used that one and also an Alison Holst pumpkin & chickpea curry (no tomatoes though) - both yum!
Basically dump everything in, stir, turn on low and forget for 8 hrs or more. If you need it sooner put it on high and roughly halve the time. Only thing to keep in mind is that you need a little less liquid than you would need if you were doing it on the stovetop cos it doesn't boil away, unless you want to thicken it.
Several people have recommended it already but the Holst's crockpot book is really a great place to start!
The Crock Pot website FAQs are also useful for "virgins".

Mmm I love crockpot weather. Yesterday I was going to do mushroom sausage casserole (from the Alison Holst book), but didn't have time to put it on early enough. Today we're having chicken catactore (however on earth you spell that), with lots of onion and mushrooms mmmmm. I used drumsticks.

Place mince in slow cooker, breaking up with a fork to separate meat. Peel carrots into 1cm cubes. Peel onions and chop finely. Crush, peel and finely chop garlic. Trim celerey and cut. Mix carrots, onions, garlic, rosemary, tomatoes, paste, wine and chilli into mince. Place bay leaves into mixture. Cook on low for 6-8hrs.

I tried the chicken makhani, and added extra chilli as someone suggested. It was so good!
Does anyone know hwo to do a pot roast in the crockpot? I did one last weekend and it was very dry, even though I added about a cup of stock and cooked on low for about 8 hours... never had meat dry out in the crock pot before... so would appreciate any tips!

Thickened later on, & then about 1/2 hour before serving put wholemeal chive dumplings on top YUMMMMM

Beef whatever-I-had-in-the-cupboard Casserole today - 1kg of diced beef, a can of chickpeas, a sachet of gravy mix, worcestershire sauce, 1 cup beef stock, an onion, 6 potatoes, 3 carrots and a buttercup pumpkin. I'll throw some diced silverbeet in about 1/2 hour before dinner.

I used to have a yummy vege curry recipe for the crockpot, will see if I can find it. I don't make it any more coz the Lord of the Manor demands meat with his meals . I do remember that it had chickpeas and coconut milk in it.
Today I've got sausage curry in it - sausages, a butternut pumpkin, carrots and onion plus curry powder, garam masala, mustard seeds and cumin (no idea of the quantities lol, i just shake them in ). Will probably serve it with rice.

Anyone know how to make soup with a bacon hock in the crockpot? Ive never used a bacon hock but my mum always used them to make soup when I was little so thought I would give it a try.
I put in a chopped kumara, onion and one of those king alphabet soup mix packets, then put the 1kg bacon hock on top of that and poured in water up to about half way in the crockpot. On high for 5 hrs- is this gonna work?!!

Use the Pea and Ham soup recipe in the Edmonds cookbook, just throw it in the crockpot.
Also, there was one a few weeks ago in the Herald by Donna Hay. I ignore quantities and chuck in what I feel like, but
Bacon hock
1C split peas
and or some lentils
Carrots
Potatoes
Onion
Garlic
Grated ginger
Bay leaf
Thyme
Salt and Pepper
About 2 litres water
The peas and lentils completely dissolve and make it quite thick, and the meat just falls off the bone. Absolutely delicious.
