When we first put Astin on formula it was the karicare gold which made him way too spilly and extremely constipated!! so we changed him to Nurture gold which made him very wheezy and chesty!! then my MIL said that DH was exactly the same and he turned out to be lactose intolerant/alergic to all the formula!! and she thinks Astin is the same judging by his reaction so she said to put him on Soy which i did and he HATED it!! he would eat it in drips and drabs because thats all there was but he was never full/satified, the formula stunk to high heaven!!! and it didnt mix very well at all!!! so we had put him back on the nurture as of yesterday and NOW he is back to his wheezy coughy self again!!!

I have tried the standard (not gold) formulas in between also and still had no luck

So where does that leave us??????? what can we try next?????

I had similar problems when i switched kylah to formula.. Karicare gold she was chronic power chucking.. like i wouldnt imagine that much could come from a baby. Nurture gold made her way to constipated and she would scream. S26 gold she wouldnt even drink to start with, now we are on the standard karicare from birth and its wonderful, she guzzles it down, doesnt get constipated and we havent had a power chuck since :)

Hope you resolve the problem soon, must be stressful

I know there are special formulas for lactose intolerant bubs. I'm lactose intolerant so I asked my GP and was going to look into it more but Gina is OK on the karicare gold. Mind you she's older than Astin so she also has baby food and water so can't really get constipated.
I'd suggest you talk to your GP or at least ring Plunket and have a chat to them. There is also goat milk formula which may help but I think you're best to talk to someone first.
Good luck!

PS: I think it's advised to only switch to soy on medical advice (even though the formula is sold at supermarkets)

We are having a problem with formula too, he was on heinz nurture and had real bad constipation, was gonna put him on soy but then found out you are not suppose to unless under medical advisement (says so on tin, but didn't read it until someone else told me) we then put him on SMA, it helped for a few days and now he is constipated again. He also got ezcema at the same time as going on formula so plunket suggested goats formula so I bought some of that yesterday, and we are slowly swapping over to that.
Goats is fine to go onto, it is the soy that is dodgy and she only be used as last resort.
If goats doesn't work for us we are going to try karicare sensitive (not sure the exact name of it), someone today said you can get that one on prescription at a discount.
Goats is real expensive, if it works i'm gonna speak to gp to see if we can get a script for that.

Oh and plunket said give it 3 weeks when swapping (not sure if that only applies for constipated bubs)

i had probs with Bay and formula too!! i cant even quite remember what the actual problem was now!! i just remember trying formula after formula after formula before settling on goats formula but Bay had hardly any probs or reactions as a bub and Astin seems to have an endless stream of them!!! so yeah i might go to docs and ask for the formula on script as i know this is great for sensitive bubs cos i know someone who uses it i just didnt think i would have to go there but ah well here we are

Amber I think going to the dr would be a good idea and getting some on a script. Or hopefully your dr can give you something else to try as well.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Have you tried the Nestle NAN H.A. It's a hypoallergenic formula for babies that are at risk of allergy. It was no good for Sam but it might be worth a try? I think it's the same price as the Karicare Gold. I just got it from the supermarket and I've seen it at most of them. It's quite new.

Karicare SensiKare (sp?) HA is meant to be a good hypoallergenic one, although I haven't used it myself. It's just on the shelves at my supermarket. Might be worth trying?

we have very limited selection on formulas in our supermarket as well as the ones in Whakatane so im a bit warey of having to travel an hour each week to buy formula. Curse this small isolated town!!!

I also cant go for the formulas that are intented for hungrier babies because he is still prodominantly breastfed and i dont want to take that away by filling him up on formula

if it is any consolation Ella was spilly on formula but not on boobie....but when we changed to stage 2 at 6 months that all stopped and no more spills or constipation....not sure what the difference was but obviously one or two ingredients made all the difference?

we use s26 gold. I found she got constipated on formula if we used the thickened one....or spilt on the normal one!!!

are you sure the wheezy cough is from formula tho? perhpas he has a pneumonia or asthma developing and not ht formula? also does anyone at home smoke???

Why don't you grab some of the HA while you are up in Auckland and try him on it, if it works and makes a difference take him to the doc and get a script for the Pepti coz the Pepti is very similar to the HA, except the proteins are broken down even further, and it's cheaper on script that buying the HA at $25 a tin. But you might as well try it first coz if the HA doesn't work, then the Pepti probably won't be any good either and you might have to look at seeing a paed, getting allergy testing done and getting a script for the Neocate that the gremlins were on.

Sorry dont have time to read all the replies, but have you thought about trying the lactose free formula by karicare?
karicare de-lact starter lactose free formula
Also give their 0800 number a call and talk to the dieticians, they will send you out samples to try often too, at least thats what they did with us...

We are just assuming that it is this particular formula because the wheeze ONLY occurs after each feed with this particular formula.

My DH smokes but only 5 a day and only outside, when hes done he washes his hands and brushes his teeth so i wouldnt amagine that it would affect him.

When you mentioned the asthma i just remembered 1 of the reasons we were having to change Bays formula was because of the wheezing on a particular type but when we took him to the docs thinking it was asthma she said that they cant tell whether a baby this young has asthma and she thought it was more the formula which it turned out to be. I hadnt even remembered this at all after all this until now!!! more like his brother than i thought!

I wish it was that simple i tried with all i had to get more milk in to soley breastfeed as this was a big thing for me. I took blessed thisle, brewers yeast, alphalpha tablets and maxalon but while it did give me more milk - it was still not enough for my hungry boy which leads me to where i am now...
