Quick question.
Those of you who use white noise to help your baby sleep - do you leave it on all night/all nap or do you just use it to help them get to sleep and then turn it off?

If you can stand to leave it on over night, and you can use anything. I would turn it off when I went to bed as I found it annoying. I switched to a CD of nature sounds and classical music that would run for 1 hour it was perfect for a nap and would end at night.

Like caliaandjack, I started out using white noise and would leave it going for about an hour. At about 2 months I switched to the 'little scout' toy with its environmental sounds. I use the 20 min option which is long enough to send him into a solid sleep. I have found that leaving them going while DS was asleep didn't make any difference to how long he slept. For us it was just to ease him into a nice deep sleep.

I leave it going all nap so as to drown out any household noises and don't actually use anything for night time sleeps

I leave it going, it definitely helps him sleep longer. On the con side to that, I think he's starting to be a bit reliant on it, and as mine only runs for 20 mins (I switch it back on during the day) I think he wakes up for it sometimes at night. Also, I'm not sure about what happens when he goes to daycare... I might have to wean him off it.

I left it on throughout all of his day sleeps, but at night time used it from his bedtime until we went to bed.
(Not really sure why because he was in another room, but just did!)
I slowly lowered the volume to wean him off, but then we went away and I couldn't play it and he was fine (about 9mths) so decided to stop altogether.
Edited for spelling

We use it only for day naps. And play it for the entire duration of the nap. I'm worried about reliance on it too, but DD is still pretty young so we'll 'cross that bridge' later I think!

I used to leave it going all nap. I did let it go for one cycle but found she slept better with it going all nap and then it stopped working.

I use it to drown out the sounds of me (or more often DH) banging around the house during nap time. We have never used it for night time as he goes into a much deeper sleep at night and the noise doesn't bother him.

Same as most of the others. Use it for naps but not night time. Not sure it really does anything but makes me feel like i am somehow in control of something! Will eventually turn it down and down and then off altogether as he gets a bit older. Use it mainly to drown out noise of DS1.

I only sometimes use it during the day now only when I remember the CD I have runs for 1 hour which is enough to get her past that 1st sleep cycle.
Don't use it for night either but I did when she was a newborn.
