We gave DS wheatmeal from the time he started eating toast, now he just eats whatever we have in the cupboard: molenburg, soy and linseed - doesn't seem to have problems with it.

I mostly use wheatmeal for my girls. They had white to start with for a few weeks but then I moved them onto wheatmeal.

Even now with Sophie I can tell if she had eaten my bread (Vogels). TMI - it takes about 6 hours to re-appear and the bits just go straight through.

ETA - both of my girls LOVE my Vogels though. They don't mind what sort of bread they have thank goodness.

I thought they were suppose to have white until around 2 years cos their digestive systems can't handle other bread... we gave DD white until about 18months and now little madam only likes my Burgen or Vogels bread...
mum to 3 lovely girls :D

I give Mika my Ploughman's rye. It has no "bits" in it, but is one of the darker types of bread. I still consider wheatmeal white.
The whole whit bread thing seems to be a New Zealand thing. I northern Europe lots of people seem to give their babies darker bread.
And I agree with Bizzy, she seems to gum it more than she actually eats it.
She LOVES rice wafers though and eats lots of those.

We use wheatmeal for the whole family Its not as "doughy" as white bread and digests better as well.

I think (from memory) the reason that they recommend white/wheatmeal is that the bread with bits passes thought babies and toddlers too fast and so there is not enough absorption time so the nutrients do not have time to be properly digested and absorbed by the body.

I thought it was because the other bread has too much fibre in it & fills them up too much before they've consumed enough calories?

White bread is not very good for anyone it is totally void of any real nutrition, I would go with the dark and non seed variety. Why do babies need bread anyway? I haven't eaten bread for years, so we don't even have bread in the house (DH has lost interest in it too)

The recommendation is white bread til 2 years (yep its too do with too much fibre for their digestive system). Jake eats any bread now, but I stuck to white as much as possible til just before 2.
DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs)
