Hey there,

Jut wondering what are your views on 3 D  Scans. I was all keen to get one but my midwife told me I shouldnt cos there have never been tests done to prove they are safe. I really wanted one but now put off. Everyone seems to be getting them and they look great. What are your opinions??

My midwife said to me - why would I want to do that they aren't much different to the other ones - but looking at the photos they are alot different - being my 3rd child I learn to sometimes trust your own feelings on things so I am still going to get one done when I am 28 weeks.

To be honest it's thought that normal scan carry a risk as well, or at least two many of them do. I personally don't see the problem in having one done.

We'd love to ourselves but I think funds may limit us.

Gen - pity you weren't referred for a 3D one at your anatomy scan, then it *should* have been free (mine was anyway).

And I've also been told that scans carry a risk, hence why my first midwife wasn't keen on me having any more than what is considered standard, but never heard anything about the 3D ones carrying *more* of a risk.

Oh, and they are HEAPS different to normal scans, I loved seeing ours !

I thought the imaging was still done through ultrasound?!?!? Well.. I assumed that anyway... just that the computer thingys translated it into 3D rather than 2D.

There are risks everywhere. If you buy into them too much then you wouldn't breathe for fear of harming your child. (Sorry, just hate everything being so "dangerous" - I'm a bit of a fatalist.)

actually now i think about it nikkiwhyte is right. I went for one on Monday!! We were in the same room and using the same machine as we did when we went for the 20 weeks scan. It is just a computer that forms the 3-D photos because we were also given normal black and white xrays.

In reality if they were not safe they would not let you have them. That is my view anyway

yeah they just use a different probe that attaches to the same machine. i was really annoyed cos they tried to do one when checking for a cleft but no one knew how to use it so we only got to see a little in 3D.

We had one at 20 weeks and it was awesome. They flick back and forth from 2D to 3D - they use 2D for the anatomy part (where they check that all is as it should be) and then show you baby's face and other bits afterwards. I can't see how it could be any different risk wise than a standard 2D scanning machine. I agree with you Nikki - too much emphasis is placed on things being dangerous during pregnancy. Just like everything causes cancer these days.....

I see nothing wrong with it, I had one and I loved it! I dont regret a thing about it! I was talking to a lady in my antenatel class whose having twins and she had had 12 normal scans and was up to 32wks i think. I think some ppl just go a bit overboard.
