Odd, I took DS to our GP when he was 6 weeks old with problems and he suggested reflux and prescribed losec straight off.

DS was on it from 6 weeks until just recently (he's now 9 months) and it was fab! The liquid form they often prescribe it as tastes awful and can be difficult to get in, but boy was it worth it with DS.

MamaT, we've just been prescribed omeprazole (same as losec) by the GP. She had a phone consult with a paed to get approval. It's a special one Renee, specifically for infants, and comes in powder form, in sachets. If you need it, your doc just gives you a script - it shouldn't cost you anything.

Dawn - it is worth a try to just try her without the Gaviscon for even just one feed - you soon know if you still need it!! A lot of babies outgrow reflux by the time they're 6 months old (this is what my GP told me) and your little one isn't far off that. The girls stopped their Gaviscon at just over 6 months old - we just went cold turkey, and even though there was a little bit of spilling, it was nowhere near the same as pre-Gaviscon.

Oh, and Treen - we just put it into their bottles of formula. Hi guys, my boy is going through this, too. Is it okay to give Gaviscon in a bottle of expressed breast milk? We use gaviscon for our DD, and it has absolutely transformed her. I would definitely give it a try first. There was no constipation for us. You can tell if you've accidentally missed a dose, or if she's only had half a dose when someone else has looked after her. She's always been really spilly and that hasn't changed, but at least she's a happy spiller now.

Our doctors told us to try to start weaning her off to see if her reflux is still there but I'll leave that for when we're both well.

MamaT. I got prescribed Losec from a GP at City Doctors. We had tried Gav & Ranitidine before hand & I went in to check on ear infections cause he was pulling his ears & he when he heard his story, he said do you want Losec & I was surprised he could prescribe it but said Hell YES. Haven't looked back

Amber, definitely try Gav first. You may have to give it 6 times a day & as others say it can stop working after a few days so be aware of that. Thanks Stacey. I think I might look into switching. This doc is DH as mine retired so I thought it would be easiest to stick with the same guy.

Who is your doc? Mine is John Geard and hes an excellent GP who will push and stick up for you and your family. He faught for me when I found out about Jareds problems. He has a sense of humour that isn't everyones taste but its similar to mine so he doesn't bother me. Try the gaviscon, it's the easiest way to confirm reflux.
I've been told constipation is a side effect but we haven't had any problems.

You ladies that have losec, were you prescribed that through your GP's?

We too started on gaviscon which helped a little but my poor little guy was really badly constipated within a couple of days so I went back to the doctor and ended up with ranitidine, that didn't seem to make much difference at all and after going back to the doc we are waiting for a paed referral to see if they will prescribe losec. I'm wondering how good my doc is

Try the Gaviscon - its very mild compared to what they could be giving her - it didn't work for us cos he did get constipated, so you might want to keep an eye on things when you start.
Also I think its heaps easier to deal with Gav if you are bottle feeding already - it was a total PIA for us to administer.

Have to agree here. They won't wanna give you more powerful medication for reflux if you haven't tried gaviscon. I found I had to use the gaviscon for about 2 days solid to notice an effect. I think it was because her oesophagus was already irritated so it took a few days of less reflux before it didn't hurt anymore. Kiara had no trouble with constipation, but yes I've heard that's a side effect. We're on a combination of ranitidine and gaviscon now. it can be quite hard to diagnose reflux and drs usually try gaviscon first but losec is what you want. it's not wind?

Hey,

Id go back to the Dr's, My wee girl got put on Gaviscon at 8 weeks also, didnt make her constipated, but it didnt work at all, she still cried in pain all the time.
It took me taking her 3 times before I got losec, and by this time she was 12 weeks old, the losec took a week or so to work but once it did she was MILES better.
She still spilled heaps but didnt scream in pain as much, we used Gaviscon and the losec.

Hi, my first baby is 8 weeks old, in the last couple of weeks she has been getting unsetteled alot during the day, she doesnt sleep well during the day and often cries during feeding latching off and on even though she is hungry,which is very fustrating. she always wants to sit upright, and sometimes makes a face like she has a bad taste in her mouth, she also always chews like a cow chewing cud, and she spits out curdled milk cud. She doesnt spill up so much since ive started keeping her upright for a while after feeds. The docter gave me some gavisgon but I dont like the idea of giving her that, as it can make them constipated.
