Hi there

Im having my first baby due Dec 4th and I'm a bit confused as to what I'm going to need to put in his bassinet as a lot of people have told me different things.

I have an assortment of sheets, cotton cellular blankets and swaddling wraps. I know not to use polar fleece or non natural fabrics in there, or a pillow or quilt or anything like that so I'm sorted on that front lol

But what Im confused about is how many layers? Like do I need to swaddle him then have a sheet and blanket as well? Or more layers or less layers than that?

Any advice greatly appreciated :)

I guess it depends how cold it is really, as the weather still isn't very settled around early December. I'm going to have a blanket on top of matteress then sheet, no top sheet as bubs will be wrapped, then just blankets on top depending how warm/cold it is

As KH25 says it depends on how warm it is and so it could vary from day to day/night to night. I was obsessed with getting it right for my DS who was a July baby and bought enough blankets for nearly every child on the street - and guess what? I only ever used one! lol.

I dressed him in a cotton all in one sleepsuit (and possibly a singlet?? can't remember) and swaddled him and then a cotton blanket (doubled over) on top during the night - he was in our room and we had a thermostat on the heater so kept the room at a constant temp. In the day time I just judged it nap by nap. On really cold days/nights I used a very fine merino blanket on top.

Have a look at this great link which I referred to lots and will do for my next baby who will be an autum one.

I had my baby in January and it was pretty warm, but she was 6 weeks prem so we needed to be extra careful about not letting her get cold. But here's a bit of an idea;
For day sleeps I'd just swaddle her in a muslin wrap (she was tiny so this was about 3 layers) with a folded cotton cellular blanket (so it was double layer). She would have been wearing a cotton onsie and some socks and maybe a light hat if it was cooler.
Depending on the temperature at night she'd be swaddled in the same muslin thing with 2-4 layers of merino blanket (I had some merino swaddles that I used as blankets for ages) and a hat. This seems like a lot but she was only 2.5kg when we brought her home so maybe you'd need less with a full term baby.

Don't fret about it too much, you work it out pretty quickly.

Yup you def work it out quickly! We had sheet, aircell woolen blanket and she was swaddled and I found that enough for Lily but she was a late feb baby... Her swaddle also wrapped around about 3 times and she was in a cotton bodysuit with a singlet and socks and a cotton hat at night.

Every child is different, for DS (10wks old) he is just swaddled for his day sleeps but if it is cold i put 1 woollen blanket on him, at night its the same but he has 2 woollen blankets on him. I have a really long woollen which goes under his mattress and comes out each side so i can wrap him pretty snuggly.

My daughter was born in December last year and for the first few weeks we had her in a cotton AIO, a muslin swaddle, a sheet and a cotton cellular blanket that was arranged on the bassinet so I could have either 1 or 2 layers of it, usually we would start out with 1 layer then after one of the night feeds when the temperature had dropped I would fold the second over. It was often just a sheet over the swaddle during the day though.

DS was born in mid march and it was still fairly warm, Pretty much did the same and NandC. SOme days (hot ones) just a short sleeve body suit, socks and cotton knit wrap/swaddle. I didn't know (til we saw a karitane nurse and she worked it out) that ds ran hot so didn't like it all.

This time round I'm planning on all in one suit thingy (with a short sleeve body suit underneath) and then some sort of swaddle/wrap during the day, maybe a sheet so I feel like bubs is in bed and then the cotton cell blanket at night. If you have a bassinet the cotton cell blanket should be plenty big enough to fold in half if it's a little colder.

You can get some really cheapish room thermometers for peace of mind (it really helped my SIL and me to have a thermometer just so we could satisfy our overthinking paranoid type minds that it wasn't too cold )

The Sleep Store has fantastic info on this. There is a general guide near the bottom of the page which is super helpful and is what we follow.

Thanks ladies your advice has been really helpful.

I had sort of planned to swaddle then have a top sheet and a cellular blanket if needed for night and add more layers if he was cold so I'm glad I'm on the right track. Its good to know they can just be swaddled for day sleeps otherwise I might have layered him up too much hehe

Sounds like I have the right gear so will just have to trial and error and I like the idea of a thermometer I will definitely be the kind of Mum who needs that hehe

Thanks for taking the time to answer!

I can recommend the Grobag Egg Thermometer, we still use it for DS who has just turned 3! Its magic as I am always cold and DH is always hot, so it really saves on the arguements!

Yep you're definitely on the right track Lisa, and definitely keep the sleepstore.co.nz saved as an internet favourite, cos their website is BRILLIANT as a resource in the first few weeks! You are so much more onto it than I was with Lucy btw.. the first night we got her home from hosp (early sep 09) she screamed and wouldn't settle for hours. I was sure she was hungry and I didn't have enough milk to BF her, so sent DH out for a 2hr car trip to buy formula at 3am in the morning haha sucker! Anyway, by the time he arrived home I'd finally realised she was just cold, so had settled her using a warmed wheat-bag, extra blankets and finally thought to turn on our thermostat heater. Guess I was just so sleep deprived or something, that such an obvious solution just didn't occur to me!

Recently i got Cellular Blanket for my Lo from The Wool Company. I placed an order online.
It is super soft cotton with soft satin binding that my baby loves.
