Topic: Another discipline question Posted: 09 July 2007 at 10:16pm |
Here's another curly one for you.
If smacking etc supposedly sets a child up for a bullying mindset, ie stronger person wins, then in the same way, do bribes (when you've done x, you can do y) set a child up for manipulation and guilt trips?

I think it depends on what x and y are. But no, I don't think you are setting them up to be manipulative. I also don't agree with the smacking statement either...but prob best not to open that can of worms.
don't think of the negative, but think of the things you are teaching them. *No free rides *you can't always get what you want immediately *part of life is that you sometime have to do things you dont want to.

I don't know if I completely agree with the smacking statement either, but it was filling up my brain and I had to spit out the question somewhere!! It's just so difficult to train children to think for themselves, have self-control, and be obedient - when really every form of discipline is some kind of control. I guess all the variations aren't that different after all!
