taine has very strong fears. He HATES a frog that appears during an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He hates the rooster at the beginning of Baby Einstein On the Farm. he also hates jake's rubber chicken (as do I) and a few other things. When he sees theses or hears them he bursts into tears which are uncontrollable. if an adult is in the room he will run to them and try as hard as possible to scramble into their lap. he is truly terrified. After these things have disappeared - all is fine. He bears no scars apparently. What i wonder about is should I comfort him - or does that tell him that the object is something that should be feared, or should I ignore it - thereby telling him that it is something not to be afraid of. Strange thing is that stuff like dogs - BIG dogs, which Jake is afraid of, taine has no fear and will happily walk up to. Jake won't go near ducks, but taine was enveloped by them at the pond and really happy. Taine also loves being dunked in the water, but show him that frog and he is terrified. any idea how to deal with these fears?

I think comforting him is the right thing to do because then he learns that you will always be there and might get curious about them.

Im not sure what the best way to deal with it is but Addison is like that with a particular pet toy, those ones with a ball and a ferret looking thing attached and if you turn it on the ball rolls round and round. We were at a friends house and they had one, Kobe turned it on and Addi freaked, totally just like Taine does. Luckily its not something we have to see very often so i was able to just hid it away so not much help sorry but Im thinking it must be a stage....well hoping.

I think giving them a big cheerful cuddle is probably a good thing. Let's them know there is nothing to be scared of, but acknowledges that they need a hug.

cool. that is my instinct, but someone said to me that it was "reaffirming" his fears and thereby contributing to them somewhat, blah blah.

If he is really sh!te scared then I would be comforting him as well.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

We used to do that, paris had a few things she was absolutely petrified of, i cannot for the life of me remember but they were weird things that me and mike thought was kinda funny. Ayja went through a stage like that oo - again can't think what random things it was she was scared of. We would reassure her or try to avoid it.. (oh yeah that's right, Paris was scared of part of her hi-5 vid where the guys dressed up like clowns - so we would fast forward through it)

Now though they are scared of all living creatures - i have no idea why, they have never had any bad experiences to cause them to be scared and have had many positive ones. Heck we even owned a cat up til last year. Paris screams if a cat comes near her, we have a few that come visit us and she'll talk to them through the ranch slider, but if one even comes inot the yard while she's on the swing - she hoped off the other day, ran inside and would not go back out. (I now do the "for goodness sake Paris, It's a cat, it's not like a lion or a crocodile just came through the gate! come on!" she is scared of the ducks at the park, she is scared of going into pet shops if it means she has to walk past the bird cages.

Unfortunately she even has made her sister scared too despite a million times of reassurance and trying other tactics like reassuring but also trying to help her get over it by more exposure in a positive way.   We went down to welly a few weeks back for the heart kids xmas party, and they had people walking around with nice placid guide dogs.. she freaked out as soon as she saw them, we had to carry her as she wouldn't move she just stood and screamed (this is my quiet 4 yr old we are talking about), someone came up and offered to let us pat their tiny little puppy one, sooooo cute, she wouldn't go near it. Ayja i managed to get to pat one after we went off without her freaked out sister.

ggggrrr at fears

i think one thing to remember is that even tho their fears might seem irrational and sometimes a bit silly to us , they are very real for the child, and whichever approach you use, do it gently and reassuringly

jake is terrified of birds too, especially caged ones. Funny as he loves the pics, and is all brave, but when we see one in real life - nah. Santa all over again.
