Topic: Birth plan question Posted: 05 August 2008 at 7:22pm |
So i have to write a simple birth plan by tomorrow to give to my midwife. One of the things she said she wanted me to put on it was when i wanted to go to the hospital. I have no idea what to write. Shouldnt she tell me that? HELP!

Usually they say when contractions are 5 mins apart. But I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with staying at home, whether you'd prefer to labour at home for as long as possible or if you'd feel more secure in hospital when things start getting serious.

Hmm how odd..usually they tell you when is a good time to go in...
My Midwife said..when contractions are 5 mins apart..LONG AND STRONG.....
However that was way to long to wait for me should have gone about an hour before I did as was a hideous Kelly screaming down the hospital Corridors due to contractions going wham bam bam!!!And I was 70% of the way there by the time I got my hands on the gas!
I think its hard to say ..esp as you dont know how your pain will be.....

My MW helped me write my birth plan (we called it my birth wish list rather than a plan) when to go to the hospital wasn't in my and is probably something you should just decide at the time. I called my MW when I was in labour, can't remember what stage the contrations were at and she said for us to call her back when I couldn't talk through them anymore turns out I was 9.5cms by that stage and wanted to push
I don't know how far along you are in your pregnancy but your birth plan is not something you should rush through IMO

I think I arranged something like, when things are getting serious uncomfortable I'll call mw and she can see how far along I am and whether it's a good time to make the move.
If I was living further away (I live about 600m from the hospital ) I'd also want to make some allowance for travelling to the hospital when not feeling so comfy.

I didn't have a time to go to the hospital in my plan. We had been in contact with the MW in the morning and already had an appt that day (Jack was early). I remember DH ringing the MW and even though I was on the other side of the house she could hear me and headed to ours. Once she examined me that is when I decided I wanted to go to the hosp. as I needed something for the pain, I think I was about 6/7cm. For us that worked well as it was about an hour or so after we arrived that I started pushing. We had enough time to get settled without hanging around too long.

I was abit like TysMummy mine started out at every 3 - 5 mins straight away, but my MW when visited could see when I was ready to go to hospital. Though sayng that I had a very basic birth plan (she doesn't believe in indepth ones as things can change so much), just where I wanted to birth, skin to skin, Vit K yay or nay, DH to catch and cut cord, that sort of thing.

I think all you need to really comment on is whether you want to stick around at home till the last minute or go in earlier - remember once you get to a certain dilation you can't have an epidural and stuff so if you want that you may need to plan to go to the hospital earlier
Both times my birth plan went out the window anyway - ended up in the main hospital with my first in an ambulance ride (things happening too quickly and I couldnt travel by car) when I had planned a birthing centre, second time around planned to go the main hospital and had her at home as she came even quicker than my first. Both times once I was lieing down I didn't move so all my plan about walking around and using the birthing ball, birth pool etc just went out the window.

well i think from memory my midwife said they need to be 60-90secs in length before they doing much & really close. She said she will be able to tell when on the phone with me whether it time to head into hospital or not. I had two contractions whilst on the phone to her & couldn't talk thru them, this is a good sign you are ready to go in. If you can talk thru them, then they not quite strong enough & unless you don't feel comfy at home, they often recommend you stay home as long as you can becuase the move to the hospital can sometimes cause the contractions to slow down a bit due to unfamiliar teritory

Yeah, I think she is probably asking how long you think you would like to stay at home vs hsopital.
I had contractions 2-3mins apart from the time they started (9.30am), but they were short. My mw said to go to hosp when the contractions were a minute long - this was about 9pm. I was 7-8cm dilated when I arrived at hosp.
I was comfortable with this because we live quite close to the hospital - it would be worth considering how long it will take you to get to hosp - including in peak hour traffic etc.

yeah definately need to think about how long it will take you to get there. We live in the country and it would take us 50mins to an hour to get to the hospital.
If you're in a similar situation I'd recommend doing what we did with my first and heading to town at the first sign of contractions and going to family or friends first so you're closer so you dont have to judge it the same.

my midwife told me to go to the hospital when contraction were REGULAR, or at 12pm (when my next antibiotics were due for strep b. At 11am, i was in so much agony I told DH to take me in despite him telling me it "wasnt time"., and contractions were all over the place. When I got to the hosp 10mins later I was 8cm dilated.
I think I could have done with some Gas earlier so if theres ever a next time, Ill be going to the hospital as soon as I feel like it!

I would keep an open mind on this one. I would have thought you will just sense when you need to go. And I would also be careful about the whole not being able to talk through your contractions bit - I could talk through mine right through labour. By the time the midwives decided I couldn't I was already ten centimetres and ended up delivering at home (which was great but not at all planned).
I would suggest like kaiz231 - when your contractions are regular and about five mins apart. But like Emma says, you may want to stay at home as long as poss or be more comfortable in hospital - everybody is different.
