For those of you that are breastfeeding & have done so in the past - Did you stick to a strict diet whilst nursing? Or did you just carry on eating the foods you like and avoid anything that may have upset bub?

I've never really dieted, but I aim to eat veges nearly everyday, wholegrain bread/toast & pasta. I'm not a big fan of fruit but I've been pushing for at least an apple a day recently.

My downfall is that I graze on food throughout the day, half the time I swear I end up eating out of boredom & this is where the problem starts.I'm really weak when it comes to chocolate or bikkies. I can polish off a family size Cadbury bar in one foul swoop. Until now I haven't really thought of how that could be affecting my milk.

By all means I don't eat fatty food non-stop. Takeaways/Pizza are a treat only once over a period of 1-2weeks. But I do tend to graze of naughty foods often and eat fattening dishes/ foods without giving it a second thought. I really want to cut the butter out of my diet too because I know I have way too much (blame my mother, she's a butter freak and plies all our food with lashings of the stuff)

Has there been any study in to a breastfeeding mother's diet and to what extent our eating habits effect our babies later on in life?

It's really starting to eat me up and I know it's a bit late when the boy is already 15months ...

TIA
Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :)

Not sure about any studies but I definitely find what I eat affects my waistline in the immediate future  I also think that by eating healthy we set a good example for our littlies.

I'm pretty good mostly, my only downfall when BFing (and beyond) was chocolate and wine but I don't have too much of either.

When Bfing I did find I'd get cravings for certain foods I wouldn't normally eat eg.  I don't eat nuts but for weeks I couldn't get enough of peanut butter on toast.

You said you're grazing during the day, are you doing this because you're hungry or just because the foods there?  I find filling up on wholegrain low GI carbs at meal times keeps me from snacking during the day, good carbs is particularly important when you're feeding a growing toddler.  Try porridge at breakfast time with raisins or unsweetened jam for a bit of flavour and you'll find you won't want to eat anything for another few hours.  Have some wholegrain toast or bread with your lunch for the same reasons.  The other trick I tried once upon a time when dieting was I only allowed myself a sweet treat after I ate a vegetable or piece of fruit.

If you actually set aside specific meal times (including a morning and afternoon tea) throughout the day and plan ahead to eat healthy at those times you'll find it easier to eat good meals, snack less on junk, take a few minutes for yourself and set a good example for Lucas.

Finally I'd say remove temptation.  If you always find yourself drawn to the chocolate in your bedroom stop buying it.

Nope never went on a special diet while Breastfeeding this. I do however make sure I get enough fluid in specially when I feel a cold coming on.

And in the beginning I didnt drink much ice tea as she seem to react really badly to it.

But otherwise not. Maybe if I did I would actually lose weight.

No alchohol for me - other than that I eat what I normally would. Although I have been trying to eat more fish as I've heard it's beneficial

No special diet here either when I was still bf'ing. The only thing I had to avoid completely was Pizza because for some reason Alyssa would be sooo grizzly after I had it, it wasn't worth the hassel.

I ate, and ate and ate whatever I wanted to! In the early days (of each bubba) I was so very hungry from feeding all the time so I just tried to eat more banana smoothie type stuff than biscuits. I could eat a whole packet in a sitting until I could taste the salt - so that was pretty dumb!

i agree with you on the carbs thing mrs mojo -- i used to be ravenous by 9.30/10am, but since i've been having porridge (with raisins - yum!) for breakfast i make it through to lunch without a problem.. .

Stop stressing, Lucas is fine!

I had to observe a strict dairy, egg, peanut, soy free diet when I was feeding the gremlins, Plunket said no chocolate too but dairy free choc was pretty much my only indulgence so I told them to get knotted!

Those early days all I seemed to do was eat. My MW suggested staying clear of OJ, cabbage and chocolate (obviously lots of chocolate) these days I haven't noticed a correlation between Blair's grizzly days and anything I've eaten. I tend to have 2 breakfasts - a slice of toast when feeding Blair his solids why waste power using the toaster.. and then have a proper breaky later - amd also make sure I get an afternoon tea as well - even if it's just jam sammies

I still tend to eat a bit more than I did, but not as much as I did prior to conception.
