Topic: Breech! Posted: 11 February 2009 at 7:21pm |
Baby Kaela seems to be favouring the breech position lately and while I know it's still early days, I'd like some feedback please!
1. Did your breech baby mean a c/s and how far along were you when that decision was made (e.g. 36 wks, in labour, etc)
2. Have you had trial of labour with a breech baby and was it successful?
3. What baby-turning methods did you try (and how many of them are myths lol)?

Jack was breech until up to 35 weeks I think, then he turned to lying across, and finally completely flipped at about 36-37 weeks. I did a lot of dog poses etc on the floor, trying to get gravity to help the situation lol.

Josh was head down and half engaged at 37 weeks and then turned at around 38 weeks the day before i went into labour (I felt a huge movement but never thought he had flipped) and we only realised when i was fully dialated and ready to push and the midwife felt a foot presenting (and what she thought was testies). There was heaps of people suddenly in the room rushing and getting ready to take me to surgery for a c/s but when the specialist arrived he said it was way too late and josh was born feet first 3 hours after my waters broke and i had my first contraction. His first apgar test was a 3 but his 5 min one was a 9.
I really dont recommend it - although feet first is suppose to be the most dangerous bum first is a much better position if you wanted to try and avoid the c/s.
If you do get bub to turn avoid sitting or travelling in a car for long periods of time as it can be a cause of breech babies (or so was told when i asked if travelling 7hours to Invers at 36 weeks was ok)

we found out jack was breech at 37wks......typical male didn't ask for directions!
they tried an ECV which failed and we had a good talk about trial labour vs c/s. we decided to have a c/s to be on the safe side, which was done at 39wks
i'm annoyed they never discussed ways to get him to turn and i didn't know ohbaby existed at the time so i didn't even think i could do anything about his position
i have heard of a few woman that have gone on to have breech babies vaginally without probs

Caden turned breech at 33 weeks, at my 35 week appointment my MW wasnt quite sure if he was head down again so I had a scan and he had turned.
She told me that at 33 weeks here was still plenty of time for him to turn.
To try and tunr him I did these things.
I went swimming, scrubbed the shower(lol) and got on my hands and knees alot and rocked, and I believe thats what turned him!
I also tried to not sit leaning back to much, I would stradle a chair instead.

Thanks all. (btw I'm in Palmy.) The breech thing has flipped me a little because I already have a c/s and VBAC history and I know my chances of trial of labour with a breech bub will be limited. But then, DD2 kept flipping into breech a lot in the last few weeks and came right for birth (so I keep reminding myself). I know to lean forward etc but I also have SPD which means I'm supposed to keep my legs together (or it hurts!) - so I will have to ask mw about that some more next week.

As you would know Rhylz was breeched...
1. Did your breech baby mean a c/s and how far along were you when that decision was made (e.g. 36 wks, in labour, etc) At my 35 week growth scan it was discovered Rhyley was breeched bum right down and head in my ribs. It meant a CS for me if an evc was unsucessful (it was) Due to having GD and Rhylz was already 7lb at 35 weeks (9lb 4oz) they did not want to risk anything due to big baby breec hed.
2. Have you had trial of labour with a breech baby and was it successful? No Elective CS at 39weeks
3. What baby-turning methods did you try (and how many of them are myths lol)?Apart from sitting position and hands and knees -which I only did up until ECV as they said they wouldn't help turn him because he was jammed in my ribs and position of my placenta made it vertually impossible for him to turn). And ECV which was unsuccessfull as above.

Get thee to an acupuncturist
They can treat you using acupuncture and also send you home with some moxibustion sticks.

Yes. Belle was head up, one foot up and one wedged under her bum. She was like that from early on and never turned. I eventually made the decision at 38 weeks because I was exhausted and feeling like a failure after many attempts to turn her. I just wanted it all over. Both the midwife and the OB were willing to wait until I was in labour if that was what I wanted.
2. Have you had trial of labour with a breech baby and was it successful?
No, I didnt try.
3. What baby-turning methods did you try (and how many of them are myths lol)?
I tried lots of time on my knees and elbows, lots of time with my hips raised higher than the rest of me.
Homeopathy (Pulsatilla)
Accupuncture (6 appointments)
Both midwife and OB tried to turn her manually (ouch)
If anyone's interested, this is a video of the little monster trying to turn (excuse my nasty PJ bottoms, k?):

Oh, I'd also recommend reading 'Breech Birth, Woman Wise' by Maggie Banks if you can get your hands on a copy at your local library.

My baby was flipping in and out of breech until 37wks where she engaged head down. To help her turn I spent a fair bit of time on hands and knees, and squatting while watching tv or reading. Not sure if squatting helped, but it was comfy and helped prepare my body for natural birth.
Hope your bubs turns for you soon, good luck

Esme was breech from around 30 weeks and didn't change but there were 2 bubs in there so not much room left to move at that stage I was actually happy she was breech because she was the presenting twin (first to come out) it meant I could elect a c-section. We booked it for 37 weeks and it coulnd 't have gone better
My partners step mother and his father are old hippys that run a health/organics store up North they are dead against c-sections and sent me all these natural remedys for turning her but to be honest as good as their intentions were I was a little insulted because I knew from the second I found out it was twins I wanted a c-section.

We were Breech at 20 weeks then they suspected Breech at about 35-36 weeks too. I spent heaps of time on my swiss ball. She was born posterior but that was better than nothing as I'm told they don't attempt VB in Palmy if bubs is Breech.
