Topic: Bringing up wind Posted: 01 March 2007 at 8:20pm |
Ok so i am having major issues withJoshua and his wind, he doesn't want to bring it up and it is causing him a lot of pain. MW told us to try cooled boiled water - didn't work. So she said to try Infacol, so I got a bottle and that isn't bringing it. All he does is cry (and me cause I can't seem to do anything to relieve the pain) and feed. Any ideas on ways to bring the wind up to stop his pain???

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My midwife told me to take Hannah off the breast after 2 minutes to burp her... and then again after 5 minutes.
It worked really well as she'd get so full of wind that she'd not want to feed anymore and then once it had settled down she'd be hungry again... argh. Terrible cycle.
So yeah, maybe give that a go?
And as far as burping techniques... the choke hold and rubbing the back upwards always worked best for me.
Good luck!

Laying him flat and massaging his tummy with your fingers in stroking movements; the "bicycle" (moving his legs); a combination of straight-upright then sitting (the stretching seems to "wiggle" it out of them); laying him face down on your arm, so that he's angled slightly, and rubbing/patting his back.

You poor thing, I know how you feel on this issue as I had the same problem with Alyssa for the first few months and the 'usual' burp positions didn't work for us either. One of the more successful burping positions we ended up using involved sitting her upright on one knee, with one hand pressed against the tummy while holding the chin up, and the other to pat the back.
Also, tummy time often helped.
Not sure if you're bf so this may not relate to you, but our problem related to my fast flow breastmilk and I found pinching the nipple to make less milk come out helped so she didn't take in so much air. Also, expressing a little of the foremilk to get to the thicker hind milk supposedly helps stop such severe wind as foremilk contains more lactose which can make them more windy.
A nice deep warm bath helped my friends baby with bringing up wind but didn't work for us.
Oh yeah, and we tried gripe water and Infacol but they didn't help. In fact, Infacol made her wind worse in our case even though I understand it works well for others.

We used Weleda Gripe Powder, which was better for DD than the gripe water and she seemed to like the taste better too. Available from chemists.
The best position for us was lying her flat across our knees on her stomach and rubbing her back while jiggling our knees a little.
Good luck, I hope it improves!
