Topic: Chch mums- St Georges/Burwood Posted: 13 October 2009 at 1:03pm |
Hi, just wanting to hear from some Chch mums who have given birth at St Georges hospital and Burwood hospital.
What was your experience like, the facilities, did you have to share a room etc etc...
I will be back in Chch at the end for the birth of my first baby and just trying to figure out where I would like to give birth.

Both are really nice. What kind of things are important for you? St Georges has more midwives on at time and more rooms but Burwood has a really nice 'homely' feel.
St Georges also has more facilities for breastfeeding (they have a breastfeeding class type thing on a Friday) but you can go there later even if you birth somewhere else.
I birthed my two at Burwood and found it really fantastic in that they had time to come and sit with you to help with breastfeeding and things. I haven't birthed at St Georges but have been there (and am working there next week).
Anyway think about what you are looking for and go from there.

Oh yeah in terms of room sharing you will only have to share if its busy and if you birth there you get preference for a single room. They generally work it by the people who have been there longest are put in a double room.
All primary units (ie not CWH) you share the bathroom.

I'm booked into St G's. Basically my MW said it's heaps 'nicer' and the food is better. BUT I have heard only good things about the care they offer at Burwood. I think that if the 'finish' of the place (paint/curtains etc) isn't important to you then Burwood might be the most relaxing choice.
Good luck deciding!

I went to Burwood for aftercare, had planned to birth there originally but Spencer had other ideas. I was put in the communal room but I was the only one in there, and they really try not to have anyone share if they can. The building is quite old but the mw are lovely and the care is great. Have heard good things about St georges too, especially about their milos.

Thanks for the replies. I have heard some good things about Burwood. I know that they are doing a revamp next year but I will miss out on that, not that the look of the place really bothers me.
Do they have birthing pools at Burwood?
I have heard people mention about the milo's at St Georges
By the sounds of it both places are good, Burwood is going to be on the opposite side of town to where we live but I do like the idea of a more "homely" feel.
Hmm, guess I have some thinking to do.

I loved Burwood - my MW is part of the team who work from Burwood so all of my appointments were there. They are super friendly, helpful and I loved that my family never felt like they were being pushed along, especially after the birth. I had DD at 11.15pm and my support team didn't leave till after 2am.. They were all welcome, it was great.
The birthing pool was awesome. I loved that the room had dim lights, it was very calm and relaxing.
I agree with Rach&Jack though, depends what you're looking for. Burwood suited us more than St. Georges when we went to look at both. I felt that Burwood was more family-orientated. The decor didn't bother me at all, it is clean and comfortable & really that is all that matters

Yip Burwood had a birthing pool. What area are you going to live in? As there is Lincoln and Rangiora if they will be closer, they are very similar to Burwood just not so busy.

milos - yummy!

i'm booked in to birth at st georges... i went to their breastfeeding class last week and i was the only one there who was going to birth there, everyone else was going to transfer afterwards.
A friend had her baby at CWH and then transferred to Burwood and she hated it (went home after 2 hours). She said it was too noisy and not relaxing at all, and I think she had trouble getting help with the baby (after csection).

The Milo's are the best at St Georges!!! I really enjoyed my stay there too I was a 2nd time mum so they basically left me to it but came if I had a prob... I had a great room with balcony and yummy food... I would definitely go there if there's a next time...

I didn't birth at Burwood, but had to transfer there as was transferred out of CWH too late to go to St George's.
I've not seen St George's inside.
I felt kind of scared at Burwood, like it was a bit creepy, but i'm a big scardy cat, and it was VERY quiet when I was there. I didn't realise they had communal rooms as all the rooms looked single to me. The bathrooms are communal, well you share them (they have seperate doors). The MW's were lovely and they have the time to spend with you which was good. (As I said I don't know what they are like at St George's, only CWH and Burwood, and CWH didn't have the time to spend with you as there are so many people there).
Good luck with your choice
