Topic: Choking - What to feed? Posted: 05 January 2010 at 5:59pm |
my baby is nearly 8 months old and chokes quite a bit. he cant go near toast, or banana (unless really mashed), grated cheese and everything else plunket reckons babies should be able to eat from 7 months. his dinner is still really mashed up with small lumps in it, but 2nite he somehow even managed to choke on that. not the normal choke then smack on the back type choking, but he couldnt get it up, turned purple choking. he was purple for ages and i finally managed to get him to hack it up my tipping him dam near upside down face to the ground and absolutely whacking him on the back. im bloody surprised he isnt hurt from it to be honest. but the food he has was hardly lumpy at all! i dont know what to do with him or what to feed him,
he has weetbix mushed with warm water for bfast and at the moment mashed banana with yogurt mixed in for lunch. i really dont wanna resort to jar food as i have made his food from scrach since he started solids but i dont know what to feed him anymore, he just cant seem eat it.
do i need to get him checked out since he cant eat normal food or do i just get jar food stage 2 for a while?
please help, i cant cope with him turning purple again, its horrible and i dont want him living off sweet stuff like fruits for every meal which puree easily

HI ya, sorry not much help probably but we are doing baby lead weaning (google if you haven't heard of it, I'm not great at explaining it), I haven't pureed anything and our girl did choke a bit for the first week or so but doesn't very often now and she eats 'big people' food (with no teeth) I suppose she just figured it out with experience, how long has he been on solids? maybe look into the BLW theory cause they aren't supposed to choke if they put it into their own mouth rather than being spoon fed

Mon I would be inclined to take him to the GP... Could there be an obstruction? Jake was referred to a paed due to his gagging as they thought he might have webbing across his throat and the paed said unless he turns blue its not of concern. So based on that I would be taking him in.
Jake would gag on lumpy food and milk/food coming back up but he didnt choke to that extent. He went through a phase where jar food was all he would eat (to my dismay).

yea my sis said take him to the doctor too :( i have heard that reflux babies are normally a bit slower to move up the food levels but his throat actually jusy cant seem to get stuff down. we feed him the same as us but mushed but even that isnt good enough. its like he just cant really eat solids at all unless they are more like thick liquid

I do think you should. Choking and turning blue is something to be investigated. Rather you check it out and it be nothing than leave it and it be something!

We are doing BLW as well. At the start DS often got things stuck in his throat but he would always manage to cough it back up. Only once has he actually choked on a piece of courgette and even then he managed to cough it up after a few secs. I would highly reccommend BLW.
But apart from that I would say take him to the doc just incase it is something. Better to be safe then sorry.

Doctor for sure. At least then you know where you stand! And I'm a BLW fan too, Hollie point blank stopped eating any food so with advice from people on here I gave it a go and now she eats anything and everything thats put in front of her with no issues
Best of luck!

yea, im not against the BLW stuff but unfortunitely he chokes even when he feeds himself. and its not cough up type choke it is more a 'i need to intervene right now' kind of choke. if it was more of a gag type thing that would be a different story but it seems to get itself lodged in the fair and square. mack doesnt have a choice but to eat what we do, we dont belive in special foods for babies and stuff and i hate the thought of letting him near anything in a packet (no offence anyone) if he wont eat what he is given he goes without, i know thats probably mean but im not having a fussy baby who only eats kiddy food like fish fingers and stuff (once again no offence) i just wish i didnt have to have a heart attack everytime either me or him puts food in his mouth waiting to see if he is going to breathe or not

I was going to ask if he was choking or just gagging as gagging is ok and normal...but turning purple doesnt sound like something I'd be happy with. Get him checked out just to be sure.
If it makes you feel better....James was really slow to start on his solids....and now eats everything and anything! still gags.....and then spits up something the little monkey had earlier (he stores it in his cheeks)...but did choke for the first time last night and I had to whack his bag to get it up....it is scary.

sorry just re-read your post, I think getting it checked would be a good idea - our DD never went blue, once was kinda really choking but it didn't take much force to get the food up.
Better to put your mind at ease and get him checked

I'd definitely be getting him checked to make sure there's nothing going on medically. The reflux can impact on eating and your GP can look at that and/or refer you to a paed if needed.

I was going ask if he has reflux as my friends DD does this (at a year) and we are wondering if she has reflux. She's been better since eliminating dairy so maybe that is an option?
But definitely see if you can get referred to a ENT specialist

i would agree about getting him checked if you are worried about it.. but would disagree about the BLW - the baby controls how much they put into their mouth and is prob less likely to choke than if someone is pushing food into them that they arent ready for or dont want. a baby will feel the food with their mouth and tongue and learn to push to the back of their mouth but if being spoon fed they dont always get that chance as the food can be pushed to the back of their mouth for them.

I'm with the others on this one hun, if he's turning blue and needs your help then I'd be off to the doctor.
How bad was his reflux, does he still get it/is he still on medication?
