What do you give your baby if they seem to be a little bunged up? Caden was the other day, the poor thing was doing little "sheep poo's" and crying cos he couldnt go properly, I didnt know what to do, so called mum and she said brown sugar in some boiled water, it worked and went normaly the next time.
But is there anything else you can give them?

Aww poor little Caden. I think with formula it's recommended you give them some water (separate) each time they have a feed? That's supposed to stop them from being so bunged up... when they're older you can give them a wee bit of prune juice diluted (mostly water).

Giving some cooled boiled water should help. You can also get some lactulose (on script) which will soften his poos. Otherwise if it continues for a few weeks I'd try a new formula, Daniel got bunged up on nurture but not on S26

Yip, if babies are formula fed, its recommended that you give 50mls of water a day to help with constipation. Don't add extra water to your bottles though as this isn't recommended. Just offer water after a milk feed so 5-10mls after each day feed.
I found it took my wee man about 2 weeks to sort out his constipation but did ofer him 1 teaspoon of brown sugar in 50mls of water every 2nd or 3rd day until it all sorted its self out.
There are lots of posts on this so you could do a search.

I too was going to suggest cooled boiled water.
If it doesn't improve, maybe look into switching formula - I know some worked better for Gina than others

I gave Thomas warm water with brown sugar in which did the trick! In saying that he's been doing normal poo for a few weeks now, and i've not had to give him anything extra.

Jezsika, thats why you only give like 5 mls AFTER every feed so it won't effect their feed.

lol wrx.
I had trouble with giving cooled boiled water, or even sugar water, to Chloe. She just won't drink it. She is starting to sip water occasionally from her sippy cup now, but I just add 10mL extra to each of her bottles and she is happy and thriving with that and no longer gets constipated. Once she starts drinking water I will just cut the 5-10mL extra water out.

You really should use lactulose and not brown sugar as the lactulose doesn't get absorbed it just holds water in the gut and makes it easier for them to pass. You can get it on script if you want it for free or you can just go and pay for it at the pharmacy as its not that much.
My gp said that you can add extra water to formula, just don't ever put less water. Is not recommended as a long term solution though but if just for a few days then would be fine. I use to put extra in Spencers when it was hot because for a while he wouldn't drink any water on its own.

My midwife told me the other day to give some water - about 20mls between bottle feeds (so they dont fill up on water when they should be eating formula)
She said they use to said to add brown sugar but she said that can upset their tummys a bit

Hi, Its true that you shouldnt give such a little one water as it has no nutritional value, and brown sugar can upset there blood sugar levels. The best thing is too get lactulose, I found it made my baby too gripey, so for us coloxyl drops are much better if you can find them. They have been out of stock for months but we got some from the auckland city hospital pharmacy. Speak to your midwife or doctor you shouldnt really mess about with this stuff by yourself. We have also changed formula from karicare to S26 (breastmilk is even better but I have run out!!!)
