Domestic flight Air NZ

We are planning on flying to Christchurch in the next month or so for a family function. But we aren't sure what we can take for baby- we had a look online but it doesn't really say.
I will be meeting my husband in Chch, he'll be driving up with my bro and SIL. So I will need the capsule to get to the airport (by myself as they will already be on the road) but of course will need the capsule when we land in Chch (the car won't be in Chch yet).

So am I allowed to take the capsule on the airplane? I won't need to take the pram cos that can go in the car. But I'll need to take a decent sized nappy bag to last the day before we leave, on the plane (not a long trip though) and afterwards until DH gets there with the actual bag...

You can check in the capsule free of charge ( won't count as part of your baggage allowance).
If there is a free seat beside you then you may be able to take it on board but that would be at the airline staffs discretion.

And I'll let you know about the portacot etc thanks Flake... He'll be, erm, just over 4 months then.... Eek, scary!!! (6 of Nov we're coming!) Pram will fit in car. Hopefully wont need much else

You can't take the capsule IN the plane though.

Hi - I flew with DS to Christchurch when he was 5 weeks old.

Although I'd been told that I would get a plastic bag for my capsule and pram by Air NZ, the person at check in said that they didn't have any. Wish I'd been told that before as my capsule had bits and ended up coming through the luggage in separate parts -- I'd take your own bag if you have one or go to the international terminal early and get it wrapped.

I found my experience with Air NZ very mixed -- no help on the way down to Chch and I had to remind staff twice about a baby seat belt, etc, but the staff on the way back couldn't have been lovelier.

Have you been able to take a capsule on the plane Tishy?

I read on one of the airline's sites that they don't allow any seats that are rear facing b/c it puts the baby at increased risk if there is an accident - that's why they only allow forward facing carseats. But I can't remember my source so don't take it as gospel!

I have taken DD on about 6 domestic trips since she was 2 weeks old - yip it seems to be 2 baby items (stroller/carseat etc) plus normal baggage allowance for adults and a bag for baby. My hubby used to fly for domestic airnz and he said that some capsules are ok, but they have to be approved by the cabin staff....and he said don't rely on it because they will all tell you different things! If you really want to take capsule on, it would definitely pay to ask at check-in, on the day - and get a plastic bag to put it in if you have to check it in. Personally, I wouldn't bother taking the capsule as carry-on, as its really hard to manoeuvre them out of it when you need to feed, and STFU juice is great for top-of-descent ear pain prevention Its easy enough with them on your lap.

Oh, and if you don't want to carry your baby through airport or have to push a trolley etc, def recommend a sling or front pack. And the flight attendants generally are awesome when they see young babies, they will really look after you

The seat belt is just a normal airplane belt that slips under your belt once done up and then around bubs tummy and clicks in, even with it on DS we still managed to sit him up or lay him in our arms

hehe i considered feeding on t/o, but she fell asleep! All the noise & vibration = great pacifier! Best time to feed is top-of-descent as that's when their little ears start to hurt, and the sucking helps. When Pip wouldn't feed at TOD last time, she happily sucked her hand instead.

Sounds like you are pretty organised, so should be an easy trip - have fun

And if you plan on bfing, you might want to ask the airline if you can be seated somewhere private - I had to whip out a boob sitting in between two middle aged men, which wasn't very nice for any of us (except DS, who didn't care!)
