Morning Ladies
Congrats and Welcome Galway
My MW has made the referral for an Amnio, so now it's a sit and wait and wait and wait until we find out whats going on with this bubz, I think they the do the Amnio around the 15-16 wks mark so have nearly 2 weeks to wait for that and then it's another 10 days to wait for the results..
I wonder if they do this on purpose to see how stressed out they can make you, because so many woman I have talked to have said they have gotten the High risk results and then they find out either after an amnio or after the birth that there was nothing wrong with bubz..Makes you really wonder how accurate their Dam tests really are and if they should really be doing these test's at all.
Anyway thats my rant for the day... I've decided I hate tests, never had any with any of my other kids and they all came out fine.

Motherof6, I totally understand how you're feeling. They've tried to encourage me to have an amnio, but to be honest, I think I'm going to say "no". It carries some risk, and sounds a bit yuck. I was reading up, and there is another blood test they can do at 15 weeks called the Maternal Serum test http://www.birthright.co.nz/preg_tests.html
I wonder if we can get that in Welly? At least it is something else before the amnio.
I know they're doing their best, but quite often I don't think medical people have the mum's best interests at heart.

I know what you mean, I hate the idea of an amnio and as I've had threatened miscarriages before and preterm labours before it's a real risk, But we need to know if this bubz is fine or not.
I hate saying this, but we have decided to terminate if there is a problem with this bubz, so have to go through with the Amnio to find out...I'm soooooo hopeing there is nothing wrong and that we don't have to end it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I completely understand your decision, and am feeling a bit the same way myself, but I am so scared of the whole thing. I'm seeing the specialist on Tuesday, so hopefully things will be a bit clearer after a chat with him. I hadn't anticipated this age thing being such a factor!

Is actually pretty silly when you think about it and the way they work out if your at risk. They take the mothers age, her weight and the size of the Nuchal fold and then work out your risk....What the hell has weight got to go with being at risk of DS, geez I'm only 55kgs right now, with Miss 3, I was 33 years old and my weight was 45kg...Sooo don't understand their way of working things out...
Another thing is I've been reading up on Nuchal fold and it's interesting every country has a different measurement to put you into the High Risk group, In Australia the measurement is 4.0mm, here it's 3.0mm... And what I have found even more interesting is when I had my scan the woman measured it 4 times, once she got 2.89mm the next 2 times were 2.91mm and the last one was 3.05mm, the first 3 measurements put me in the low risk the third is the one that put me in the high risk. *shakes head* God I hope they are wrong.

I can't help but think with that kind of measurement, the angle of the baby could be such a big factor. My GP doesn't think much of the nuchal fold test, so I do understand why he is pushing for something a little more certain!
I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine. Hell, if you were in Australia you would be!

Yeah, I don't think she was happy about bubz postition as she got me to roll onto my side and then kept getting me to cough to try and get bubz to move, but bubz had other idea's and stayed where it was and then went to sleep cause when I coughed it wouldn't even move it's arms or legs..
Told my MW all of this and she still said I couldn't have another scan yet as when you go talk to the specialists they give you a scan then..So it's a waiting game now, which I sooo hate as I'm stressed to the max over all of this..

Well I'll be thinking of you, and I know how stressful it is. They seem to have the baby's interests at heart that sometimes they forget there is someone else involved who can be pretty traumatised by it all!

wanda and motherof6.. I read that those N-fold tests are far from accurate, but then they put you in the absurd position of deciding whether to take the amnio which carries 'small but significant risks' to baby
It's completely rude and unfair of them. I'm sure both your babies are perfect and beautiful. Wishing you well whatever course you choose to take
My problem right now is a small one. No midwives want to take on a Christmas baby. I've contacted 12 so far. One promises she'll find me another. I hope she can.

Nistoddie
Look what I found
If the NT is increased, it does not mean there is definitely a problem. Some normal babies have increased fluid, too. Image 2 shows a baby with an NT of 2.9mm, which is at the upper limit of the normal range. Though the risk will be higher than the baby's in the first image, nine out of 10 babies with a measurement between 2.5mm and 3.5mm will be completely normal.
Lovely, MW's don't tell you that...They just ring you up and say your high high risk and scare the $hit out of you.
I still want to know how the heck they came up with a 1 in 24 chance, I'm not that dam old, I'm not over weight and the baby is on the border line between low and high risk...Personally I can't stand computer programs that work that sort of thing out.

Hi everyone,
i have my NT scan on Monday. Donmt know much about how they calculate the risk but im very surprised to hear weight has anything to do with it!
I also have the genetic screeing on Friday. its not without reason, both hubby and I come from a culture where some diformities are more commom because in the past people didnt tend to marry out of the culture so the gene pool was a little more limited. But I am only half and hubby is 1/4 so i really thought it wouldnt be required however taht is obviously not the case and they want to check to make sure. I guess I should be grateful they are checking instaed of moaning about another blood test and the time off work. We will have to listen to the genetic counsellor blab on for an hour before they give us the test so we are looking at a long and annoying appointment but hopefully that will be the end of that. oh no wait - silly me, first we will have to wait 2 weeks for the results!
And then the NT scan on Monday, bit too close but may as well get it over and done with I spose.
Actually really keen t have another scan, been having awful dreams about losing the baby and I just want to see everything is ok cos im a bit freaked out.
Good to be able to share though, as hubby wants all this kept a secret from the world inmcase there is something wrong! So not me, hes very private, Im a sharing person!

hi everyone!
goodluck to all you going through stress and worry at a time where all you should be worrying about is MS! I agree with you motherof6 NT scans sometimes make me think why bother when its reliablility sucks! last year when i had my first preg i didnt know NT scans existed and this year it was an extra unneccessary worry.........
anyway MS seems much better...surely but slowly im starting to get back to doing the things i used to do....like scrubbing the bath!
sometimes when i think what if somethings wrong? i just think to myself that if this lttle being is meant to be in my life then nothing can take it away......its working for me.....so far......
hers to a great day...now off to the daily chores

I am with you Mrshouse with the emotional Roller coaster thing. GOd knows how many times I got mad a DH and then min later cant remember why?
Or I was watching 60min or some thing last week about Organ Donation.....broke out in tears. My DH was shocked!!
So yah I have to say this is a weird thing.
I am also with Mrshouse re the NT Scan. When Pregnanant with DD never ever heard of it and never got one done and DD is fine (I was 27 at the time). I am 30 now and there are NT scans etc.
One extra thing to worry about. I am getting mine done on Friday at 9am.........cant wait!!
Good luck to all who are having it done. Try not to stress as I am sure we are all going to have beautiful babies.
Good luck with Amnio test Motherof6.
MS is gone for me YAY!!
