Topic: For those born late 70s and early 80s     Posted: 01 July 2008 at 4:19pm |

I have a baby shower to go to in a couple of weeks and on the invite it says we need to bring an item that was popular (and something that we laugh about now) in our day. It will be put in a capsule with a little story about it for her daughter when she turns 21. Any Ideas? I wanted to do the Purple Goana but someone has nabbed that. Also, it kinda needs to be able to be bought now (unless someone has the item and no longer want it!)

Thanks.....now lets remenis(sp?)

What about buying one of the characters from Rainbow. I bought zippy and george not that long ago (teddies, they sat on my dashboard in England, yes I am sad).

we did something similar - my family back home bought Caitlin retro toys (like the Noddy doll Debs loves in Caitlin's room ).
Perhaps a Tupperware shape sorter? those have been around forever!
I only know about old UK stuff, doubt that would be anymore of a help

   I was born in 1982..

What about care bears, popples (don't know if you can still get them), those snap bracelets, my little ponies, muppets (just trying to think what we used to watch on TV...) fraggles, smurfs ....
Did you used to watch What Now? Remember that guy (was it Danny??) who used to make stuff each week? He always used dowel (sp) and his trusty "snips"

Ah yes! I loved my tupperware shape sorter!

Also, if you had the time (and the inclination) .. do you remember those wooden boards with pegs in and you had a cut out wooden doll (like a paper doll but wood) which "climbed" down the pegs? ... My grandad made mine for me.

My fav item of clothing as a toddler was a brown knitted vest with Winnie the Pooh on it (it sounds naff now but it was the late '70s and I was a trendsetter ok! ) anyway you could get AA Milne stories or a pre-disneyised winnie the pooh character.
I also had a jemima doll (play school) and my grandma used to make knitted dolls.  I recently saw some black sambo dolls and also what about the extra touristy little moari dolls that you can get from souvenair shops.

I wonder if you can still get jellies - they were all the rage for a while there. Oh and nomads.

What about making a mixed cd of all the one hit wonders of the late eighties/early nineties when we were teens:
- Vanilla Ice
 - MC hammer
 - Sir mix-a-lot
 - New kids on the block
 - Teenage mutant ninja turtle theme music

Ok, can't think of anymore right now but maybe someone else can add to the list.
