Yep 60 minutes, should be interesting.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I only caught the last half of that piece, but it seemed a little one-sided ie. don't do it. I think the Rabbi of Auckland came across as a bit of a moron and he could have been far more articulate on his side of the debate, but overall the tone of the piece was pretty biased towards the anti-circumcision campaign.

well after watching one, I am pleased we didn't get it done (we were just too unorganised!). There was no reason for us to do it at all, and it looked so sore for the poor wee boy, I was crying and he wasn't even my boy!

I definitely couldn't do it, I just couldn't watch someone do that to my (hypothetical) boy! But it's a very personal decision to each family.

I didn't think it was a great article for either side, the guy who was anti was a bit woo woo I thought (who comes up with elastic and a film cannister to grow back your foreskin??). But I agree, it was more anti than balanced. The most striking thing about it for me was watching the wee baby get circumcised, made me not ever want to put any of my babies through that.

Interesting argument about female circumcision. Is it any different? Ugh, just thinking about it makes me shudder. There's such an outcry about it being mutilation, what is different to male circumcision?

I cried and held Sam really tightly. I am very against circumcision and really felt for that poor little boy.

No offense to anybody that is for it.

LOL Mazzy I thought that guy was a bit woo-woo too, but then again, he is a parliamentary researcher so that in itself suggests he is socially challenged!

Willie and I discussed it when I was pregnant with the gremlins and had they been boys we would have had them circumcised. He's done and doesn't have any 'manhood' issues about it, and both my brothers, my dad etc. are all done (not that I'm looking LOL I just know they are!) so it's just 'normal' to me. But then we had all girls so thankfully we don't have to worry about that decision, we just get the whole teenage contraception thing instead

PS. I don't get the relationship between male and female circumsision? The big issues with female circumcision is that it is carried out on older girls against their consent in appalling conditions and usually by someone who is not a medical professional but rather a witch doctor or local butcher. I'd have an issue with male circumcision in the same circumstances, but that's very different to it being carried out in a surgery/hospital in sterile conditions by a trained professional.

Fair enough, never thought of it like that. I just can't handle the thought of anything happening to my bits, in a hospital or not! LOL

DH is against circumcision and as he's a guy this is his call. I remember asking mum about it when I was little (no idea how that topic came up!) and she explained it to me. I think it's another of those very personal parenting decisions. Not right for us, but not an issue for others.

ARGH!!! I just typed out a huge ranty reply and it vanished! Is the censoring lock on tonight? lol

Anyways - I was saying that I believe both male and female circumcision is barbaric and can't see how it's ok when carried out on a boy in a sterile Dr's practice but not when done in the desert with a blade and a stone on a girl?!?!?

DH is very much FOR, I'm 110% against and refused totally to have anyone do that to my child. IMO "cleanliness" (DH's excuse) is not reason enough!

Same in this house. Luckily there is only one DR in Blen that does it and he dosen't really like doing it. I kind of think if they want it done, they can get it done themselves when they are old enough to make that choice? Not that they probably would. I do get the theological debate, though, but its not my thing.

One of the big deciding factors for me is that when I was younger the boy across the road had to be circumcised for medical reasons when he was about 13 and I'll never forget seeing him hardly able to walk for days afterwards. I didn't understand what was going on at the time, but now I think it would be far better to have it done as a minor procedure as a baby than under general anaesthetic at a much older age.

As a girl seeing 1 Yep For, & cleanliness. Yea its not the norm but we are always gunna look different to our peers aint we? AS for the pain caused to a young 1? I know of a baby who cant remember & know of a adlut male who chose to? Adult male felt the most pain!! And he can remember it
AS it so happens i dont really care but feel for my boys whom the 1st other penis they see (& learn how to clean from) will be very very very different to their own

Check out this link that someone posted on another thread about circumcision http://www.mothering.com/articles/new_baby/circumcision/protect-uncircson.html
I am totally against it and couldn't watch that boy getting it done. I think it is barbaric to circumcise a baby without any anaesthetic and after reading the above article I would be inclined to not do it even if I am told there is a "medical" reason for it.

I would look at the procedure differently if it were for medical reasons and done under some kind of anaesthetic.

You could also argue that sweat glands make you "unclean" but we don't have people chopping out their baby's armpits!!!!
Circumcision is just as nuts sounding to me!

i just had to say... you dont have to chop out armpits, just get rid of the salt that you produce by absorbing it with crystals or something i think you call it smellies or deoderant. Maybe washing your baby will help, but remeber washing too much could also lead to skin disorders...

I guess the arguement is that certain cultures believe this is "right and acceptable".... so I think thats where they were drawing the similarity. I agree with you though Emma, there is a big difference, but I dont think I agree with performing a procedure on a wee baby for religious purposes when that baby hasnt chosen that for themselves.
