hey i was just wanting others to share what their 6 month old's sleeping patterns were.. paris was great, can't remember exactly her patterns but can't remember having too many probs, but this last week Ayja has been CRAZY! She has decided 2 sleeps a day is the way for her, but won't sleep at night, just lies in bed and screams and has now discovered that if she crys out "mmmmuummm mmuuummm" that it will make me feel guilty and go get her she has been finally settling at about 11.30 - midnight, and wakes again at 5.30 - 6am so right now i am (barely)surviving on 6 hours, it makes the day soooo long and i have placement coming up in a week - i need her to sleep, not only so i can get a bit more rest and prepare for placement, but also cos Mike's not gonna handle her doing this when i am not there! argh.

I have always been the one for routine, and making sure my kids are put to bed awake and all that other guff, and till now it has worked and my kids have been pretty settled - but this girl has a stubborn streak and has me completely stumped! any ideas? what are/have other peoples babes been doing?

Jake was pretty erratic up until about 8 months, but I think that may be more about what WE werre doing, than about him. Now Jake sleeps during the day, one or two naps - ranging from 45 mins to two hours. We had huge probs recently as the PIL's house had no cot, so he slept with me in the double bed....no problems until we got back to NZ and re-introduced him to the cot. He screamed and screamed and screamed.

how long does Ayja sleep during her naps? Could you cut them down? I remember you said she gets overtired really easily, what time do you intially put her to bed? Is she over tired then?

usually after waking at 5.30 - 6 am in the morn, she goes back to bed at 8 am, and sleep till 10.30 - 11am if she's really tired, then stays up till 1.30 - 2, and goes for a sleep, lately she has slept an hour to and hour and a half at the most in the afternoons, which is crazy - cos Paris still has a 2 and a half hour nap in the afternoon most days! so when ayja wakes at 3.30-ish she stays up till about 6 then i try and put her down - sometimes she'll sleep for an hour and wake up again and that's it for the night till really late.

I didn't want to give her just 2 naps, but she has done this herself, not wanting to sleep until those times, i feel so thrown and reckless cos she is up for quite a while now each time. I think i may have to rethink the night routine and see if i can fit her in a bit better. sometimes things just happen all in aheap and she isn't getting seen to till after 6 pm.. (mike is always off doing stockcar stuff lately so i am the only one there at night, feels bad cos paris isn't getting to bed till after 8 sometimes too... BAD BAD BAD!) lol

Jacob has just started doing the same, it is soooo frustrating. He has been on 2 day naps for ages, sometimes I can "force" him to have 3. This has happened since he started soilds. We have a great routine, but, like Ayja, he wakes after an hour and won't go back down. Can't offer you to much advice, but I will be interested in hearing what everyone else says. I'm totally hearing you about Mike not coping!

Oh, I just thought, zzif I can get him down before 10, I go in and get him up for a "dream feed" not waking him, before I go to bed, usually fills him up enough to go through till aobut 6 - 6.30, sometimes longer. When he is up and not wanting bed, I keep offering feeds, and make one of those a formula feed, sometimes makes him sleepy..

Josiah and I are setting his routine at the moment. He wakes about 6.30am, has a feed, has a play with Daddy, has some solids, has a play on the floor then goes to sleep around 8:30am for half an hour or so.

At 10:30am, he has a 2 hour sleep, then we have lunch around 1pm. He has been fighting it, but we are slowly establishing that he will have a sleep around 3pm for anywhere up to 2 hours.

After dinner, he is going to bed between 7:30 and 9pm (depending on how the afternoon has gone - weirdly enough, if he's had a decent sleep in the afternoon, he tends to go to bed earlier!).

He's sleeping until somewhere between 11pm and 2am when he has a "dream feed" (thanks Annie!) then it's back to bed for the rest of the night. Some nights, I'm up for an hour at 4am resettling him and convincing him that he is NOT going to snuggle down with me for the night, but the sleeplessness has been worth it - he's practically sleeping through the night now, and one feed is better than 3!

Josiah's main problem is that he kicks off his covers, so he gets cold which wakes him up and he wants to snuggle in our nice warm bed and we don't want him to! So, I am still getting up to him, but now it's a case of moving him back down the cot and covering him up, and usually he goes back to sleep.

It seems that babes sleep less the more tired they are (so backward to us older humans) so maybe she's over tired???

I remember Hannah was a perfect sleeper until around 5 months when she started waking during the night all the time and it took 'Operation Take the Power Back' to regain control. I just had to let her scream the house down

Good luck with it all Janine, hope you get something sorted soon

lol yeah i used to give her "dream feeds" at about 10.30/11pm, but now she is pretty much up til that time - before all the maddness, she would still have the morning slepp - go back down at about 1 for the afternoon wake at 3, and go back to bed at 5 for about 45 mins, then at 7 she would go down for the night and wake at 6.30 ish... so this has been a huge change. may just have to do a blitz of making sure she isn't up for more than 2 - 3 hrs and being strict again.. hopefully being back at daycare this week will tire her out

6 months is an evil time for babies sleep patterns. It's apparently to do with their developing awareness of what's around them and beginning to develop recall memory, greater enviromental stimulation etc.

Maya was absolutely hideous between 5-7 mths. Up until then she had slept thru 12 hours at night from 7 weeks, but then all of a sudden she went feral. She would go down ok, but then wake up and scream (and scream and scream and scream) half the night until I eventually gave in and fed her. I remember ringing Plunketline one night and they kept me on the phone for over an hour while we waited for her to scream herself to sleep, because being on the phone was the only thing that stopped me from going in to her. I would sit and breastfeed her thinking "Please settle down" and crying my eyes out because I was so tired and frustrated.

But it is a phase, and we got thru it by being tough and sticking to her routine, and doing the whole controlled crying thing to re-teach her to put herself to sleep. I know it's not for everyone but it worked for us.

PS. Janine, Maya has had a few late nights in the past couple of weeks too. Partly hectic afternoons, but also it's getting dark later and she tells me she can't go to bed till it's dark

She has settled down a bit int he last few nights but me, i am soo exhausted it's crazy - had an exam today that i hadn't really had the chance to study for too much - it was the most hideous exam ever and if i pass it will be a fricken miracle.

Paris is back to semi-normal too - yep she's the same as Maya too - doesn't think it's time for bed till its dark

My computer had a break down so have'nt been on for a while!
Paige is the same if it's light she won't go to sleep.

With Blake in the morning he wake's about 7ish and has a feed and solids about 8ish the in bed about 9-10 11 if I'm lucky, then feed and luck 11.30-12 in bed about 1-2 then a breast feed and back in bed about 3 for an hr some times he doesn't have a sleep.

Bath at 5.30 breast feed at 6ish and dinner then in bed by 7pm and thats him for the night till 7 in the morning.
With Paige at this age I was giving her a feed at about 10 to get her to go through.
Karen.

Becca... I had the same problem with Eleanor kicking off her blankets, or scooting up the cot and getting out. She now sleeps in one of those sleeping bag type things, and she has been sleeping really well ever since. The only problem I have is on wash day!

She's only just started sleeping through at about 5 and a half months, and has just dropped down to 5 feeds a day, but still spends large chunks of the day asleep... usually goes something like this:

6am Feed, change, straight back to bed.
9am Feed, bath, muck about until 10:30, then back to bed.
12pm Feed, solids, awake until 1:30-2pm.
3-4pm feed, awake until about 5-6, then back to bed.
7-9pm Feed, solids, back to bed around 8-9:30pm.

We usually miss one of the sleeps when we are out & about, which is probably about 4 days a week.
