Topic: I dont know what to do ... any ideas, Posted: 16 January 2006 at 9:11pm |
Our baby girl is only 6 weeks old, I love her soo much so does my Husband.
The ways things are, we can hardly live. He works in retail and it just doesnt pay enough. I'm a baker and have always earnt the most. Because of that it looks like I have no choice but to go back to work in the next month.
I dont want to go back, because I know what I'll be missing out on, yet if I dont go back. Then we cant afford to live.
I'm kinda starting to get really angery at myself. Beacuse I dont know what I should do.
If I go back, I'll never see her. I'll miss out on everything I want soo much to be apart of.
If I go back I know that I wont be the Mum I want to be. I'll be going to work, working 9 - 11 hour days. Comming home shattered, eating then to bed.
But if I dont go back. She misses out on the most simple of things.
Ps been to WINZ and they wont really help.
So any ideas?

ummm, I know it could be tough but as a baker you could maybe do catering/baking from home? Go round the cafes in your town/suburb and ask if they need cakes to sell their customers, saves the cafes heaps of time and gives you work...? Sell bread/baking products at a local market once a week? ...
Probably impractical but although I'm not a professional I was thinking about doing the cake thing myself. I know even Cafe Lafarre here in Welly buy cakes in!

It will end up costing more than what I could sell the product for. Big companies are able to sell more product at a cheaper cost.
We thought of part time, only noone wants a "part time baker" full time or nothing.

Sorry Haven't really got any ideas for you. I know what it is like tho, my partner and i are both studying plus he has a full-time job but it doesn't hardly bring in enough for us to survive. Have you looked at family assisstance thru IRD, you should be at least entitled to the parental tax credit which is a max of $1200.00, going to the IRD website and check it out, you have to apply in the first 8wks of your baby been born.
That is all i can offer you sorry.

What about in one of the big supermarkets? I was at New World for 7 years (thru uni) and we had some part time bakers. We also had bakers that worked during the night/early morning. If you could pick up a 4-5 hour early shift (say around 2 or 3am) could you tie it in with your partner's hours?

I'm still employed by a supermarket. Only thing is around where I live its all full time bakers sad ay.
I dont think I could handle too many kids. Chasity is out 1st baby.
I kinda dont like barnados, very long story, lets just say one baby would still be alive and almost 9 if it wasnt for them

Family assisstance is different to working for families apparently, but ring up IRD and request a family assisstance form anf fill it out because there is no harm in applying, I didn't know about the $1200.00 till my mums friend told us, and at least you are pretty much guaranteed to get it, almost everyone gets the full $1200.00. Or ring them and talk to someone about it. I know what you mean about WINz, all they could offer us was $33 a week which if you ask me is pretty pathetic.

Hrmmm... if you don't have enough to live and say you can only get $26 a fortnight then perhaps they didn't give you enough to work with on the website. (They aren't always brilliant at advertising ways to get extra income)
Have you checked out the accomodation supplement too???

You must be entitled be more then that. Its blows me away sometimes how the govt expects families to live on next to nothing. Do they think raising kids is cheap i dont think so!

thank everone. We are going to ring IRD today. I knew money was going to be tight once baby was born, but I never expected to be living off weet-bix and milk for dinner!
I'll let you all know how it goes today.
Chasity has to get her first shots today, so once she has clamed down from that I'll be back

If all else fails I'd go in to WINZ and make an appointment with a case manager. It really depends who you get as some are extremely helpful and will do everything they can to help you while others let their cynicism get in the way of their job. Grrrr. They annoy me.

Yep - I had an awesome experience with WINZ today. I was getting a partial benefit until last November when my income finally got over the limit and I am now able to be self-sufficient (Yay - no more DPB for me!). But over Xmas things have been tight, and so I went to see them and the lady was awesome - gave me a food grant to stock up on groceries, and paid my power bill. I think it's partly because I have managed to get off the benefit and just need a bit of extra help, coz they were never that helpful when I was actually on the benefit.
Although a friend of mine who has two kids and whose partner only earns $400 a week got the real run around - $83 a week from family assistance and not a peep from WINZ. So it really is true that it's all about which case manager you get.

if you ring winz or really any government agency, write down the time and name of the operator...as well as the info they give. if anything is contradictory you can then make a complaint. doesn't really help too much, but makes you feel better.
BTW I completely understand the dilema about to work or not to work. In japan i went to work at 8am and got home at 7 pm. saw jake on weekends and about 30mins during the day. It was tough and i did it for a year. Don't know how looking back.

I definitley have to go back to work... we are starting to really struggle and all our savings have been eaten up so there is no emergency stopper to fall back on! Peter and I might be moving to Nelson in April though so I thought I would wait until I definitely know what we are doing before I go and find a job.... They make it so hard on young families don't they! Peter apparently earns too much for any Working for Families money but it still goes quicker than I can count it and believe me the only splurge I have every week is a womans day and a big wednesday ticket, hehehehe, although when I win tonight our worries will be over, heheheheeh
