I'm talking about Tony Veitch.

According to Stuff it appears as if he's being stood down from his job on Radio Sport but he's still reading the sports news on TV1. I saw him on TV last night & it made me cringe slightly (not sure that's the right word but YKWIM). If he did assualt his former partner, I'm not sure he should be reading the sports news. But no complaint was made so I guess that makes him the same as the next guy.

Thoughts?

Idon't think he did anything, no charges have been layed yet so he is fine.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My fellow Sally Belly!

I completely agree with you! I couldn't believe it when I saw him on the news last night, and I now look at him completely differently. If he really didn't do anything how come he isn't commenting? It just makes him look guilty.

I really think TVNZ will have to stand him down until this is sorted out.

I agree with mummy_becks - no complaint has been laid or charges brought against him. Maybe he's been advised not to say anything about it? Can't believe everything in the media...I mean if he did do it then it's awful, but who knows what really happened.

There seems to be lots of speculation and nothing concrete but where there's smoke there's fire, etc, etc.

I think it's wise that he's been stood down/on leave while it gets sorted out. If it's proven that he did it then TVNZ surely can't keep him on (think Liz Gunn, Clint Brown) because of the precedences set and the fact they're running state funded anti domestic violence campaigns.

I do feel a bit sorry for him in that it happened a while ago and she hasn't laid a complaint and apparently they came to some financial compensation? Not by any means am I condoning it but it smacks of someone having a go at him a long time after the fact.

Will be interested to see how it turns out.

I think it is slight duble stanards as ellen said as Clint Brown was stood down and you never hear from him now.

I do think its interesting that the woman was prepared to take financial compensation and not make a formal complaint but she shouldn't be judged on that either as at the time I am thinking she may have not been in the right space.

Not a nice situation for either of them to be in.

"guilty until proven innocent". How fair is that???

I feel really sorry for both of them. No-one except them knows what really happened. Perhaps it was both of them scrapping it out? Or even her attacking him and him trying to protect himself? Not that I'm saying either of those things are acceptable, cos they're not, for either party. But we can't all just go around assuming he is a heinous wife basher until it is proven that he is.

I'd say he's not commenting because TVNZ have asked him not to.

Yeah I think we are very quick to think the worst.  DH and I were talking last night and he had heard that she had fallen down stairs or something so it makes you think were they hurling abuse at each other and did he push her or something and she fell.  Then she may have said that she will report it if he doesnt cough up.  I'm just speculating but that is just as plausible as believing he beat her to a pulp.

I dont condone violence of any sort but I think there are different circumstances in each case.

But I think TVNZ had to stand him down while it is being investigated.

I'm glad he's stood down while it's being investigated - it's a really serious allegation. If it's found to be false, then he should be reinstated and be able to sue, but if it's true ...

I do think it's a pretty huge story to break if there's not strong evidence - definitely a law suit in the making.

Apparently her back was broken so whatever happened, it was pretty serious.

I too think it's best that he's stood down while it's investigated but the truth may never come out due to lack of a complaint to the Police.

I find this very thought provoking.

They say silence is golden but it can also be very condemning!

I read this morning that an old work colleague has stated that he kicked her in the back several times breaking it. I also thought it strange that she was "paid out" if it happened but then I started thinking about how much publicity this has caused and it makes me wonder if that's the reason she accepted the pay out (she had to quit her job after her "accident") and didn't press charges. Dealing with such an injury would be bad enough let alone a press circus as you are trying to recover. She also had her career to think about.

I definitely think he needed to be stood down until issues are sorted out though. Tvnz are running the anti violence campaign in conjunction with parliament. That whole campaign would have been called into question and lost significance if he had been allowed to continue on.

I don't know how to do a link but this is some of what I read.

His sidelining follows revelations in The Dominion Post that he secretly agreed to pay former partner Kristin Dunne-Powell more than $100,000 in return for her silence about the incident.

Auckland police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said police could investigate the allegations, but they would need some evidence.

"But who would know, unless you got that from the complainant?"

She said a complainant would add weight to any prosecution.

Veitch, 34, has made no comment on the secret payout and the 2006 assault, in which he repeatedly kicked Ms Dunne-Powell, fracturing her vertebrae in four places and inflicting a head injury.

She spent months away from her job as Vodafone's general manager of marketing, had a breakdown and was later forced to quit work.

A former Vodafone colleague said Veitch had kicked his former lover as she lay on the floor of his bedroom. "He kicked her so hard he broke four vertebrae ... She couldn't walk.

"She went from a lovely sporty girl to someone who lost a lot of back muscle. She was seriously weakened."

It is also understood that it was hours before Ms Dunne-Powell, 33, arrived at hospital in Auckland.

She was in a wheelchair for some time but the pair agreed to stick to a story that she had fallen on the stairs, another source said early this week.

Ms Dunne-Powell, who is now chief operating officer of broadband firm Woosh, did not file a complaint with police.
