Topic: Job application - What to do? Posted: 07 August 2009 at 10:53am |
Good Morning Ladies,
Happy Friday
I need your help/opinions please...
I have applied for MY DREAM job. One I would absolutely 100% love to do, it is about 5 minutes drive from my home as an added bonus.
I sent in my application on Tuesday and the lady replied to my application saying they would be looking over C.Vs this week and I would hear back by Friday 14th as to whether I would progress to interview stage.
Now, I want to know from those who have been in a situation similar or those who have employed people before, what can I do to make me stand out and to prove to them how much I want this/how awesome I would be at this role without coming off too pushy?
I would even be willing to work for less money etc, that is how much I want it!
Any ideas would be hugely appreciated as I have never wanted a job so much!
TIA

Hiya, are you going through an agency or through the company themselves? I have been in this situation before but through an agency so I felt like I could be pretty pushy and called them the day before and the cut off day to see if they had any news.
If it is direct through the employer I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that as I have been in the position of recruiting staff before and didn't appreciate pushiness as this could mean that the person was going to be "high maintenance" in the role. The application itself is the best way of standing out, but if you really want to do something extra you could maybe send a polite email as a followup saying how much the job interests you and that you are looking forward to hearing from them (perhaps under the guise of "just checking your received my application").
Good Luck!!

Hi Parki, I have been to a few interviews recently, 1 I got but turned down & 1 I wanted but did not get. I think I over tried for the one I wanted & was more relaxed & did not mind if I got the other one, which I did.
I think it is important to do your research, find out about the company, & prepare your answers. Have a plan of what you can offer & what you want out of it. Go in positive, don't over agree, show them that you can think for yourself. At the end you could say something along the lines of this is my ideal job, & I could see myself fitting in very well & being an asset, blah blah.
I would not say I would work for less as that say "desperate" not necessary "right person".
They will have an amount they can spend on wages for the position & in a lot of companies if they don't use that amount then it is taken off their budget.
FX you get an interview & the job

The job is being advertised directly by the company.
They are a small and fairly casual team I think (Well from what I can gather after researching the website etc)
If it were a corporate company I would feel a bit more comfortable being a little more 'forward' but I feel they might be scared off!
She has already replied confirming she got my application so I can't really use that as a reason to email again?
I'm not normally a pushy person, especially in situations like this but everyone keeps saying "But it's a recession blah blah blah, you have to pull out all stops etc" So I'm not sure!?
I guess there isn't a lot I can really do unless I get an interview at which point I have a chance to sell myself (not literally )
I would never tell them I was willing to work for less money, was just trying to get across how much I wanted it! Ha ha
Thanks for your replies

I guess turning up at the work place with a plate of muffins looks a little "pushy" and "desperate" then
No help but good luck. Its always hard when you find a job you really want and know that you will kick arse at.

You could always send an email to say thanks for your call, I look forward to hearing from you again soon or something similar?
Good luck!

Yeah seeing it is a casual place you could send an email early next week telling them you are looking forward to hearing from them and you hope the recruitment process is going well (or something greasy like that!)

Good luck - I'd personally hold off contacting them until the end of next week (is that the 14th?) as you could come across as annoying otherwise! You did say though that you'd heard back from them and she said that she had received your application - was that an email? - if so you could always hit reply and say something like thanks, and I'm really looking forward to meeting you and discussing my suitability for the role (short, one-liner type reply).

What i have done before, is e-mail asking for a chat with the person who would be my immediate manager to find out more about the role.
admittedly, i did this before submitting the application, but you could still try it now . . .
You get a foot in that way, and also find out some of the things they will definitely be looking for at interview.

I'm an HR Manager and personally people that contact me after submitting their CV but before I've shortlisted and decided who to interview just annoy me and do nothing to enhance their chance of being shortlisted.
Your CV will be what gets you shortlisted so it needs to be up to date and list all your skills and experience. Then its up to you to sell yourself in the interview. If you do get an interview a quick email the day after the interview to say you were pleased to have the opportunity to meet and are excited about the role is good, but not phone calls.
Another thing is to tell them what you can offer them not why the job would be perfect for you. It's amazing how many people say I'm just looking for a job or its convenient for me because of the hours/location/whatever.
GOOD LUCK with it though.

I agree that now, it may just be best to leave it till you find out if you're getting an interview, as you don't want to appear desperate.
Did you do a cover letter? I think they are pretty key. I always address the aspects of the job description in my cover letter, so it looks like it is relevant and thought out and not just a standard application letter.
I recommend finding out everything you can about the company, and then show them you have done your research in the interview. This shows a genuine interest as well as that you are proactive and a hard worker. During your interview, you will get a chance to express how much you want the job - make sure you tell them why YOU would be perfect for the job, not why the job would be perfect for you.
Also, always have some questions that you can ask about the position, again it shows interest. And perpare for "tell me about a time where" questions, as it seems a lot of smaller companies use these a lot.
Sorry if I am telling you how to suck eggs.... I really hope you get the job. I know exactly what it's like to desperately want a particular position.
Let us know how you get on. Hugs!

Yep my pet hate when going through cvs are people who contact me "pushing" for answers, especially if Ive stated what day the shortlist will be complete etc.
However .. my fingers are crossed for you

Update!
I had a phone interview on Saturday for this job and have an actual interview tomorrow at 12pm!
I think the phone interview went quite well and was quite thorough.
I'm so nervous! I'm usually ok with job interviews but this one is making me really nervous because I want it so much!
Any great tips on winning interview techniques?
I know all the general stuff but anything extra would be hugely appreciated!
As they asked a lot of questions over the phone, what sort of things do you think they would be asking at a second interview?
TIA

The best advice I can give you for interviews is
'become the answer to their prayers'
In other words make sure that you keep telling them all the great benefits they'll get from hiring you and make sure you don't go down the path of 'I like the pay, I like the hours, I like the location etc. etc.' But of course be honest too. It's just all about the spin
Also it would be good to think of some questions you want to ask them - it's better to have a few things so that it's not a one sided interview.
Probably they will ask you some questions like:
What was a challenge you encountered at work and how did you deal with it?
What do you perceive as a weakness that you have?
ETA: Oh and if at all possible try to avoid talking $$ until you have the job. But just in case they do ask you what you want to earn it would pay to go and do some research
http://www.hays.net.nz/main/default.aspx
is a great place to check on the salary range for your position. They publish a survey every year. Always helped me negotiate my pay rises
Good luck!

Good luck for today - I'm sure you'll do great. Think of some real life examples of things you've done well at work that you'll be able to recite, as they will no doubt ask you those type of questions.
