Topic: Who just saw the news Posted: 18 August 2009 at 6:35pm |
Some woman in american is preg with 12... yes 12 babies and wants to deliver them naturally!?!? Got insane? Apparently the last person to deliver naturally with lots was 9 in 1970 something and they all died.. I think that's just irrisponsable. Still, I think having 12 is irrisponsable too..

I didn't see it, how far along was she? I would be surprised if she even carries them to term Did the fertility docs learn nothing after the whole octomum debacle.

its scary too.. I mean, its awesome they've got preg thru IVF, but wouldnt you think a case like this would be a good candidate for selective reduction? ESPECIALLY because some/most of those babies wont survive? It would be a miracle if they did - but chances are they wont and it's sad.

Why are they still implanting so many embryos? That's so bloody irresponsible. Women are not meant to have litters.
It makes me so mad. The chances of any of those babies surviving is so small and I bet that she signed on knowing full well she wouldn't do selective reproduction. I think it's ethically wrong.

They should never have implanted 12. In NZ they're reluctant to implant even 2 cos of the health risks and impact on the family. I can't believe they did that esp after Octomum as everyone has pointed out. It's not fair to the babies who sadly, are unlikely to survive and it's not fair to the mum who, IMHO, needs some serious help.

Argh this sort of thing is too annoying, that octomum was featured on Dr Phil for like weeks and they added up the cost of 8 and how many people it would take to care for them and it was loads and loads.
How can 12 kids be cared for equally, how could 1 mum ever dream of coping with that.
i can't help thinking its greedy but at what cost to those babies!

I just dont see how she can carry them. For goodness sake she is a human being not a dog!
I think this might end very sadly, i hope it doesnt, but I just cant see how her body will cope trying to grow 12 babies! Can you imagine how big she will be at 20 weeks let alone 30+ (mind you I have no idea how far along she is now...)
Something really needs to be done about the IVF regulations in the states, its ridiculous.

I think this one is in Sth America though but I agree totally there need to be stricter controls. A very good example of medical science moving quicker than ethics.

It's ridiculous, people like that should be sterilised because clearly she's putting her own desires ahead of the well-being of her children (which yes, I agree, probably won't survive )

you just couldnt physically carry them to full term anyway.. I remember watching oprah (or dr phil) with a lady with 4 and the doctor said she would only be able to carry to 31 weeks - which she did.. so yea, mad.

Here is an article about her/them. It says she is at least 16 weeks. It is nuts, she is nuts, her partner is nuts, the whole thing is nuts!
Very few of them will survive, apparently each baby has a 1 in 100 chance of survival... never mind the risks to her.

oh that's sad! it would be soooo hard to choose to selectively reduce IMO, even though it is obviously the best option... wonder how many embryos were implanted?

I thought I read somewhere that she was from Tunisia so Africa? Not America anyway, and perhaps there are strict cultural/religious rules against abortion, even in a case like this. Still can't figure out the logistics of so many babies in one womb though!

I agree completely with everone elses comments we are just not meant to have litters. Something really does need to be done about the ethics of this.

"Our joy increased with the growing number."
These people are delusional. She has had several miscarriages before, how is she going to feel when she goes into labour at 20 weeks and loses them all?

Personally I think if there are rules against abortion then there should be rules around IVF - i.e. very strict controls.
But the fact that the article says they don't know if she was offered selective reduction makes me think it isn't illegal there.

even if all the babies to survive she is going to need a lot of nannies..cause even if she has a husband/partner and feeding 1 baby at a time each (so 2 at once) each baby takes say 30 minutes to feed so thats around 3 hours feeding and if they feed approx every 2-3 hours..by the time you finished feeding the last babies the fiirst babies need feeding again oh and in that time you still need to change their nappies and put them down for a sleep..might as well say goodbye to sleep
