Topic: When to stop bottle feeding... Posted: 07 February 2010 at 8:17pm |
At what age do little ones usually stop having a bottle? Ty is not quite 1yr but I'm lucky if I can get 1 bottle into him a day... He does drink a fair bit of water, but should he still be having his 3 bottles of formula a day??
Oh and I make his breakfast up with formula... so that's like an extra half a bottle!

Don't know anything about it. But just wanted to say how much of a cutie your little guy is - what a gorgeous smile!

He is sooo cute!!
I thought 600 mls a day was until they are about 18 months - then weaned down til they stop at 2? Unless he is a really good eater - with loads of calcium and iron ?? Maybe he is just full. He might like cows milk better once he is a bit older.

500-600ml equivalent formula (or cow's milk after 12 months) but that includes milk on cereal, yoghurt, cheese etc. Was what plunket told me.
I have rung plunketline a couple of times they are usually really helpful with this type of question.
My eldest dropped to 1 x 180ml at around 18 months and then dropped his milk altogether at about 2. He was however not eating any dairy cos of an allergy (his formula was a specialist script one). My youngest seems to go between feeding 3 times a day (and sometimes once during the night) to only having one feed but it's impossible to know how much he is actually having. He also has milk on his cereal.

I have been wondering that as well Rose. Thursday and Friday Cody only had his morning and evening bottle. He wouldn't take it during the day. I was wondering if it was just the heat, though today he did have 3.
You could proberly move him onto cows milk now anyway. Might be easier and that way you won't have to buy formula.

Gracie is just over 1 year and she only has two bottles a day. After breakfast when she has about 100mls and before bed. We make up 200mls for this one but she is yet to drain the bottle. I think all children are different. Gracie is having some yoghurt and cheese but not every day. If he is eating well and everything else I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi, little miss in my house stopped at about 11 months - it was such a struggle and she would fight us all the way. She always dropped a bottle well before she was suppose to all the way thru. We do cows milk on cereal, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream (maybe once a week) and at 15 months she is doing really well. As mums it probably stresses us out more worrying about it! She also now will have milk at morning and afternoon tea and also has a bit of water thru out the day - I don't give her anything else like juices to drink.

Hehe thanks ladies! I think he's pretty cute too!
He has ALOT of cheese and yoghurt... like will have a finger size stick of cheese and a yoghurt pretty much every day. And he looooves cream cheese so has that a fair bit. Then 100mls formula on his brekky. But yeah to me he seems to eat quite a bit? For eg. today... he had one and a half weetbix's and half a banana with 100mls formula for brekky, marmite sandwich and calci-yum yoghurt and cruskit and a fruit bar thing and rice crackers and cheese for lunch and for dinner he has steamed veges with one of those watties simply create sachets (3/4 fills a normal sized bowl) and then a tin of custard for desert. And as for bottles... he's probably had 50mls total out of 2 bottles!
Hannibal that's reassuring that your little girl stopped at the same time

I think they vary massively, I wouldn't worry if he is eating, cheese, yoghurts etc.. it might be a blessing.
My little one is on 2 bottles a day he would probably have a lot more if offered. He has always loved milk though, so we might be a long time before dropping all together. I would be quite happy with what he eats to drop them.
They also go in phases, we have had phases where he drinks very little.
It sounds like he is eating well so I would follow his lead, offer it but if he doesn't want it thats ok.
My mum thinks I stopped drinking any milk from about 9 months and I still can't stand it, where as my brother would drink litres a day given the choice.

I was just wondering whether he might be giving up the bottle rather than the milk. Maybe try the milk in a sippy cup.

At 1 year plunket recommend weaning off bottles and using cups etc. He can have straight cows milk if you want, and if you put it on his cereal, and he is having ample dairy during the day don't worry! :)
DS 13months is still on 3x200ml of toddler milk a day, but that is only because he isn't very good at eating :(

DD is 14 months and has 2 x 180mls a day (1 of cows milk in the morning and 1 of toddler milk at night before bed time) plus she eats well and has yoghurt and cheese as well. We have gone through stages where we would be lucky if she had 1 bottle of 180mls, so it does vary. I have tried going with a sippy cup and even tried having the milk cold but NO! as far as DD is concerned milk must be warm and in a bottle!

omg your wee boy is gorgeous!!!!!
If he is giving up the bottles I wouldn't worry about it- I think it's more about offering them to him. At one they should still have 500ish mls of milk a day but if they are having yoghurt, cheese, ice-cream etc they don't need that much. By 1 the food he eats is more important than milk.
We have the opposite problem- miss 16 months LOVES her bottles and refuses to give them up! It's a tricky cycle because we give her the milk because she doesn't eat well- but by having milk she doesn't need to eat as well as she's already full from the milk argh!
