Topic: Pregnancy Links Of The Day Posted: 24 November 2006 at 5:09pm |
Just thought I would start this and each day add a few pregnancy/parenthood related links since I'm always on the lookout for something interesting.
What colour eyes will my children have? Find out here Turns out all my children will have blue eyes! Not sure where mine came from though since my parents have brown and green eyes.
Baby Name Voyager I have been playing with this a lot lately. It's a HUGE graph of names that changes as soon as you type a first letter of a name in. INSTANTLY find your favourite name and see it's popularity from the 1800s to 2005.
The lighter side of parenting: Funny stories and jokes This one is good to lift the spirits and give you a laugh in between peeing and puking (In my case)
Please add to the list if you want to! I know I love finding great links to pregnancy related stuff that differs from the ones that have the same old stuff in them.

My mum has beautiful dark brown eyes, and my dad has green eyes, and I ended up with blue eyes!

Bombshell, if your brown eyes are made up of 2/4 blue and 2/4 brown, then you could have a blue eyed baby. It is just if you have any part brown that your eyes will be brown as it is dominant. If your eyes are 4/4 brown, then yup, you will have a brown eyed bubba - but there is no way of knowing till bubs is here! (That's why eomachine got her blue you see, there would have been recessive blue with both parents)

According to that, If I have 6 children (gulp), four will have bron eyes, one blue and one green. So far, two nearly black eyed boys!

Sorry bombshell, I mean that basic genetics means that eye colour is (very loosely) determined by 4 parts, 2 parts come from each parent. Your DH, having blue eyes (blue is recessive so his 4 parts need to be all blue to actually have blue eyes) pretty much means that his 2 parts he passes on to the child will be blue (so, blue, blue)
Your eyes are made up of 4 parts from your parents. Being brown, they only need one of your 4 parts to be brown, as it is the dominant colour. So, no matter what colour your parents eyes are, your eyes could possibly be made up of Brown, blue, blue, blue (there could be a green in there, not 100% sure how strong it is, but I think Brown beats green).
Therefore, if that is your makeup, you could pass on blue, blue to your child, making them have eyes that are made up of blue, blue, blue, blue. If you pass on any brown, then the child will have brown eyes.
Is that clearer how it works?
Anyway, there are other factors that influence it - like for one quirk of genentics it is possible for 2 blue eyed parents to have brown eyed kids sometimes, plus other combinations like hazel etc don't fit into this basic model. But, at a very basic level, that is how genetic eye colour works.

Apparently my kids are meant to have brown eyes (according to science but not that web site yet as im about to try it ) and my son came out with bright blue eyes!!!! and still has them 3 years later! my hubby has brown eyes and i have dark hazel so not sure where the blue came from as it is meant to be the least dominant colour!! just like his hair! - hes blonde as! and im brunette and hubby is dark red!! hes certainly a throw back! lol

whoa - only 290 babies in one million were called asia in 2005.. (i had to use the conventional spelling to get any results).. my girls IS unique - despite the fact that when i booked with my plunket nurse she said she'd had 3 other ayja's/asia/aisha book with her that week - oh and the birthday party we went to on the weekend there was a little girl the same age as Ayja.. also called Aisha.. pronounced the same.. was funny.
lol and Paris was widely used boys name ages ago.. and up until the 1980s.. lol.. oh this is fun.
Michael feels special cos his name was #1 in the top 1000 names for so long. lol

Okay so just done this test and my eyes are green (mum blue, dad brown), DH's are blue (blue, blue)... so we get 50/50 blue eyed kids and green eyed kids which is true so far
But then I tried it on mum and dad. So mum is blue (blue, blue) and dad is brown (blue, brown) and it reckons 4 browns and 2 blues per 6 kids. Well Mum and Dad have 10 kids: 3 green, 4 blue, 3 hazel/brown... so that's way wrong! Why doesn't it mix blue and brown to get green?

Green is a seperate allele - the main 3 are brown, blue and green, with blue the least dominant. The green could come through either side and hazel is a really complicated genetic variance that doesn't fall into the simple model of inheriting 2 from each parent and probabilty calculations.
Chances are your dads alleles are blue, blue, green, brown. Mixed with your mums straight 4 blues, you can see that the liklihood of 4 blues inherited from that mix of 8 alleles is the highest, but all it takes is one green or brown with the blues to get green and brown eyes. And that is why there are 4 blue eyed siblings, 3 lucky green and 3 brown.
