 Topic: 1st time cloth user!

Todays resolution is to try using cloth nappies for the first time so are there any trade secrets or helpful hints that could help me out????

have a look in the product review section of the ohbaby forum  there is some info in there... i have been doing heaps of looking into this too- and there are heaps of helpful people around here who will be able to give advice/help etc..

also it depends on what sort of nappy you are using...
but the best tip i had was to make sure you had good covers, so even if your nappy leaks the cover will keep it contained. that doesnt apply to pocket nappies of course, in that case tho the tip would be to make sure the insert isnt sticking out the back

there's a couple of us agents that are also memebers here (me and AimeeJoy are Fuzzi Bunz Agents and I think Nikki Whyte does Mummy's Choice and a couple others.)
There are a couple of recent threads under "product reviews" or you could have a look over at www.thenappynetwork.co.nz for reviews of all kinds of nappies (that's were I got all of my info before I decided on Fuzzi Bunz for Caitlin).

ive just got some old fashioned white nappy cloths but seriously lookin into a nappy like fuzzibunz after all you ladies have raved about them. Have yet to do any research tho. Thank you all for the directions. i will deff look into the web sites when i have a free minute!! So far today the nappies have gone well, and Mya actually seems to enjoy having them put on, well she atleast lies a lot stiller then when im puttin on a sposie :P

I'm dreading the day she's mobile and I have to chase after her to put a nappy on her

Will you be using them (flats) tonight and do you know about doubling them for that?
Flats are not too difficult. You may need to change them more often, and definitely watch the leg holes for seepage. When I was using them I bought disposable liners as well, they work out under 10c each

Will be sticking to sposies at nite till i feel confident about cloth! I am finding i am changing them more often, but i have enough to last me 2 days so as long as i keep up todate with washing i should have no problems there.Have got the disposable liners but Dont have any over pants, that will be our 1st purchase next time in town! And no never heard of doubling?!?!?!?!
The trick to keeping Mya still during changing is i distract her with a toy, or bottle of water, make sure shes really intrigued with it then i change her as quickly as possible :P also i find singing (and i have the worst singing voice), or just making silly noises helps distract her.

Doubling = folding a separate nappy and placing it so that it goes all down the middle of the nappy you are putting on. It increases absorbency but makes some pants rather difficult to put on top

Heard good things about Bummis Whisper Pants... easy to put on and not to hot in this sort of weather.
Don't get fluffies  or PVC pants (Fluffies are quite leaky and PVC doesn't breathe)
Get a wool cover or something PUL

Just to let you all no, today went really well, unill DP came home and declared that he prefered sposies (not that he changes many nappies or would ever clean a cloth one) but i will perserver for a few more days and see if i can actually keep up cleaning them etc. Mya got a small touch of nappy rash today too, 1st time ever, do i apply telcolm powder at every change? i applied rash cream and it cleared no prob but would like to avoid it gettin worse.

because with old fashioned flats the wetness is right next to their skin a barrier cream or powder would be best, this also means you have to change them more often too. and telly hubby since you are the one changing most nappies it is your choice....

I guess it comes down to reasons for/against disposables/clothies. If you're doing it for financial reasons, and doing all the changes, then it makes sense to stick with it for yourself.... maybe he's concerned about the rash?

I use the cloth flats during the day with the liners and use Curash powder at every change and my girls have never had a rash. I got some great and fairly inexpensive covers called Bravo Wraps from www.babyonline.co.nz and I also use some of my pocket nappies as covers.
At night we use pocket nappies as the microfleece seems to kep their skin drier, but I still use liners as well.

Thanx very much for all your advice, went back to sposies today as we were out alll day and didnt want to risk anything happening. will be back on the wagon tomoro tho  Where can i get Curash powder from?

nikki, i have just got a swaddlebee for charli and it leaked after she had it on for only 1.5hrs! do you need to wash it a few times for it to 'settle'?

Does it have a hemp insert or a microfibre one?
My swaddlebee used to leak up a storm, but then Deb let me know that it was probably because the hemp was getting flooded and wasn't able to absorb the wees fast enough.
Otherwise... you might need to boost it with something.
Orrr... the cut could just not be right for Charlie as it is quite a different cut compared to other naps.
Do give it a few more goes with altering absorbancy though!
