Hi guys

Sorry to put this in general just figured I might get more answers

So looking at contraception until after our wedding in January and am wondering about peoples experiences with different kinds of pills and weight gain or other side effects. So if you would be so kind as to let me know what pills you have been on? What you have preferred? Which ones have had bad side effects? If any of them have caused you to gain/lose weight? I realise that the pill will generally react differently to different people but just want to work out if there are any I should avoid.

I HATE the pill. It messes my body up so much. I hate all pills but thats just because they dont agree with me.

Perhaps the mini pill is a good idea, that way it wont muck up your cycle to much if you want to TTC soon after wedding.

I went on a mini pill that was 98% effective & you could take it within 12 hrs (not 3hrs) but it cost me $30 every 3 months

I was on monofeme for years and years and they dont muck up your cycle, I ovulated as soon as I came off it and Im PCOS and I got pregnant 3 months after stopping it - in fact there is little evidence to suggest the pill confuses your cycle at all - without some other physiological issue

the pills have slightly higher levels of this or that drug, so you just have to try til you find one that works for you
You will have to take into account breastfeeding -? will have to be a mini pill
the different doses do contribute to certain side effects or lack of but you will have to discuss the good and the bad points with your GP

Just because I found this pill perfect dosent mean it will work at all for you

Hey bex , well im on the mini pill Noriday (seeing this forrum just reminded me to take it ) i cant go on the normal pill and have never been on it as i suffer from debilitating migrains and a heart murmor . I did get pregnant with Amelia on the mini pill ( she was very unplanned ) but that was because i acidentally skipped a few days . with the mini pill you cant skip any days or u have to take it for a whole week and use condoms in that week before you are safe again . i have no side affects on the mini pill , no weight gain , skin problems , mood swings etc.  I use to be on the depo  (injection) but i would never go back on it . i was on it from age 18-22 and when i look back at photos i really was overweight in that time ( i was 67kg at my heaviest and am now 53kg which is my normal weight) i also found that the depo gave me massive mood swings and bad skin . it took over a year for me to get my period back after being on the Depo and it was then that i noticed the weight just fall off me . i wasnt trying at all to loose it . even when i got pregnant i got to 70kg which is just 3kg more than what i was when i was on the depo. everybodys different tho and i do know of the odd person having no side effects on the depo- just not many . i am thinking about going on the iud so would be interested in hearing some opinions on that .

I am too scared to go on the IUD again after getting pregnant on it once lol, I know the chances are pretty slim but still freaks me out mostly because we lost that baby and I'd hate to have that possibly happen again

I was in due Aug so you possibly were lurking and saw. I know it can be really effective especially if you are religious of checking it but is probably better for longterm which at the moment we aren't looking.

yea that would of been it , i wasnt sure at one stage if i was due in july or august so was reading both .

the good thing about the pill i am on ( might be the same with others but as i havent had them i dont know for sure) is that if you want t TTC then you only have to stop taking the pill , you dont have to worry about waiting months for the depo to wear off or get the IUD removed ( which i hear can be painful ) its a good option if you are planning to have another bubba at some stage in the not too distant future

I was on Noriman (sp?) pre TTC Jackson, then went onto the Mini Pill post birth which I had constant nausea and break through bleeding with. So I went off that and had the Implant put in which ended up being worse than the mini pill.

Anyways, before I digress, I didnt have any problem with gaining weight, more loosing it. But we dont think its related to that.

Sorry havent used Loette. Is there some kind of barrier thingy (sorry not 100% sure what its called) that is inserted like the IUD??

I was on loette for almost 9years, and err was rather rampant and didnt get pregnant on it, found it better than the mini pill because you have 12(?? or more) hour leeway to take the pill. I came off it and 10 days later was pregnant with B. Here was me expecting for it to take ages, so definatly didnt slow down my fertility. When i finish BF, i will go back on it but yea cant take when bf.

Had minimal weight gain, nothing outrageous, although hard to say since i was 15 when i started so hard to know what was normal teenage growing. but i was always a size 8-10.

Only downside is the cost i think its about $40 for 3months although has been 2 years now and i cant remember excatly. But it worked for me so was worth it.

I was on loette for 3 years, worked well until I decided I was sick of remembering to take a pill and switched to depo for 6 months. First 3 months ok, bled constantly for the next 3, went off it and loette wasn't strong enough to stop the spotting (it's one of the lowest dose pills) so went to monofemme. On that for another 3 years, went NFP for 12 months successfully before a 'freak' early ov and DD!

I was on Loette and it cost $40 for 3 months

I was on Monofeme for a few years before having DD. I cant remember if it mucked up my cycle because i wasnt charting or anything but it did take me over 1 year to conceive DD.

Your other option might just be to use condoms, and not have sex while you are fertile at all

Hey Bex
Personally the mini-pill did muck up my cycle (well I was 18 and wasn't tracking my cycle as such but had spotting pretty much constantly). After my heart op I got the all-clear for the combined pill and found that great in that I had no spotting while taking the hormone pills and light 3-day periods. Only downside was bad cramps on the Sunday before AF starting. I stopped taking the pill 9months before TTC and my cycle was regular for the first 3 months after stopping but then it went all haywire. Maybe if I'd stayed on the pill right up till TTC then it wouldn't have been so hard! (That's just speculation hehe).

Oh the name of the mini pill I was on was Femulen. And the last combined pill was Levlen (can't remember the other ones, they got changed a few times to try and alleviate the cramps but it didn't work).

Just goes to show everyone's different eh!

I was on Norimin for about 6 years, came off it last year. I hated it!!! Was fine for the first couple of years (aside from making me feel really sick the first while i was taking it) but then it started to change, my boobs were constantly sore all the time and hard, and made me feel sick, and i was so so grumpy! then i started getting really depressed on it so was time to call it quits! !

eta: completely lost my sex drive too!

then about a month after i came off it BAM i had the worst skin ever! (and this was a couple of months before my wedding!) total breakout all over my shoulders and back. still getting some of the effects now almost a year later.

i dont think im ever going to go back on the pill again

I was on Levlen pre-TTC. I started on that at about 15 or 16 until 24 and had no problems with it at all, no weight gain, no spotting etc etc.

I will go back on that after I stop BF

ETA - I came off the pill in Dec 08 and found out I was pregnant with DS in April 09

I was on the pill for 8 years. I was also running 3 months together due to period pain. When I went off the pill my cycle just carried on as normal. It took me just over 6 months to get preggo, though we werent charting and we werent .... very often (maybe once a month) cause of a medical condition.
