Topic: Fetal Movement - a lot Posted: 11 June 2010 at 5:00pm |
Hi All, I know this sounds like a silly thing to be concerned about as most people worry about not enough movement .but this is my second child and first time round didn't feel much in terms of movement, just kicks really.
However, this time at 20 weeks I feel as though my baby is about to burst out(!). It seems to move from one side to another (ie a see a big lump on my right side, then it moves across to the left, for example) or I feel a lunge like a somersault which can be quite uncomfortable. Other people talk about "flutterings" which nowhere compares to what I am experiencing - sometimes the frequency and intensity of the movements make me feel nauseous.
On the 18 wk scan the OB said it was a very active baby, so is that perhaps why the movements seem so big?
I e-mailed my obstetrician who probably thinks I am a nutcase, but no reply yet.
Has anyone else experienced BIG movement during the second trimester?

Is your placenta on the back or front? And where was it during your last pregnancy? It can make a huge difference on movements. My first i didnt even have a good kick until 23wks and she was pretty quiet most of the time but i had the placenta on the front which cushioned a lot of movement. My second my placenta was on the back and OMG the activity of that girl wow, she never stopped moving and even to this day shes still the same always on the go.

I have the EXACT same thing going on.. I had an anterior placenta with DS and this one is posterior...
With DS I felt him at about 19 weeks but never very much and was always having to poke and prod or drink cold water to get some good movement so I didnt stress..
This baby seems to have freaking dance parties in there... and I fell thumps, whacks and jerky movements all over my bump (was only ever in 2 places with DS).
DS was a sleepy baby and this one was sooo active in our anatomy scan it wouldnt keep still, tumbles and twists the whole time. Sometimes it feels like its having a seizure the way it moves about in there!
I am enjoying it though, such a different experience!

Lily was super active too, felt like she was trying to break out, of course she would be active for about 24 hours straight then nothing the next day so I would panic!

Thanks for all your replies. It's just these silly pregnancy books which worried me with all their talk about "flutterings".
I can't really read my OBs handwriting on my notes, but I think it does say posterior for my placenta and I had wondered if that might make a difference.
With my first pregnancy I had placenta praevia so my placenta was in totally the wrong place. I hardly felt anything, and it was at least 20 wks before I was aware of any kind of movement, even at 37 weeks the hospital had to point out I was having a braxton hicks contraction but I couldn't feel it.
When I went for a scan at 18 wks this time the OB said "are you feeling this baby move, because if you are I'm not surprised!" so clearly he saw a very active baby. And at the 12 week scan the baby was turning around and all sorts of things. I have been feeling movements from around 16 wks this time, and these really big shifting movements for the past 2.
Thanks again for your replies, at least I know I'm not going mad.

i had exactly the same thing. Huge movements with number 2. Such a different feeling and they started earlier at 14 weeks where as i didn't feel Ds1 till 22 weeks. I aslo think it's because the tummy is stretched heaps from the first pregnancy so you can feel more too. I remember feeling the smae way thinking something was wrong but it wasn't just an active boy!

mine was the opposite
With Caitlyn she moved so much , I thought she was gonna kick her way out ...made it very difficult to buy a pregnancy test at 8 months with her kicking about (it was a dare ......pregnancy gets kinda boring by then ...)
Ty on the other hand was much more placid , didn't move much at all
and thats how they are now, Ty is cruisy , C is veryyyyy energetic

you also know what you are feeling rather than thinking it might be or missing it all together.. my #2 was a right kicker and wriggler - she even kicked coming out (very fast I might add) and she's full of beans now 12 years later
Dunno if it was coinidence but both my girls were kickers the boys were more chilled in there

I never had the "flutterings" that the pregnancy books talked about either. There was nothing gentle about my sons movements! I started feeling him at around 16-17wks - big kicks and lunging movements that would make me jump. My work mates thought it was hilarious to see me jumping as if I'd been bit all the time. I finally got used to it after a while but it took a good couple of weeks!

Hahaha, this sounds exactly like what's happening to me.
I did feel flutters and bubbly movements, but only for about a week at 16-17 weeks. After that there was nothing gentle about the kicks, and at 20 weeks my bump started to visibly move of its own accord.
I'm 24 weeks today and it quite honestly feels like he's practising a circus act in there for the time he's awake, rolling and turning and generally doing baby kung-fu to my insides. I can't wait until he's big enough that he *can't* turn around, because it's getting damned uncomfortable now!

Hi All, my obstetrician got back to me today and said that it is very common for women in their second pregnancies (and presumably 3rd, 4th etc) to complain that the movements are uncomfortable, and it is nothing to be concerned about. So I feel a lot better now, though am sure it won't be long until I'm worrying about something else!

i guess every person, and every pregnancy is just so different ay! I am only 12 weeks with my first bubba and began feeling very faint "flutters" about a week ago! now they are pretty obvious bubbly feelings- so cool! at the scan yesterday the sonographer said we had a rediculously wiggly baby so i guess all its acrobatics are why im feeling it so much
id say just relax and enjoy it! you may just have a wee karate champion in there!

With Keira I didn't feel her movements til nearly 20 weeks, although at the 12 week scan she was ALL OVER the show, the sonographer was getting frustrated as she couldn't get measurements (was highly entertaining for us though) once I started feeling her move, it just didn't seem to stop and the same as you, you could see her move from one side to the other and see a foot poking out and her bum. her kicks were very strong too.
This time around, I get light kicks quite often too, kinda hoping this one will be more placid as Keira is pretty hyper!
