DS had them a few months ago - does one of your children have them? It was probably a bit different for us as DS is a baby & didn't really scratch them. We just used calomine lotion and tried to avoid touching the spots as I remember having them as a child and some of the spots really hurt!

the best thing that helped my three through the pox was phenergan. during the day the calamine lotion stopped the itching mostly but at night it was shocking... so i drugged them to sleep... they slept the whole night and had a reasonably comfortable sleep. i also put baking soda in their baths in the evening, but oatmeal is good too.

we were told that calomine will dry them out causing more scarring, pinetarsol (sp?) is great for easing the itch and tea tree cream to heal them heal.
But theres always conflicting stories!!

nah calamine wont cause them to scar when they dry....they need to dry and crust over to heal....its the scratching and removing the top off fresh ones that cause scaring....
Bizzy....just read about the outmeal thing...on google...does baking soda help the itching aswell? never heard of that one but have some to try tonight. what about hair........he was due for hair cut so its very thick which makes him itch more....other then that he isnt really itching its more of the pain.

Baking soda in the bath is really good.
Also you can apply white vinegar to the really itchy spots as this will help alot with the itching and healing

Calamine lotion is no longer recommended as it dries out the skin and makes it more itchy!! Pity everyone who has used it in the last 50 yrs!
We had these recently. I set aside a mini bottle of aloe vera handcream and told the girls anytime they felt like itching, they could get some cream and put it on instead. Tepid to warm baths can provide some relief (but you don't want to do that too often because of the dry skin factor), and we had jelly and stewed fruit when they were feeling particularly flu-ey. DVD's are great too because they distract the itching fingers.

We used pinetarsol baths & Hypercal cream.
I send the DVD stash, especially if the child has got them really bad.

We were advised not to use it as well. We used Solosite gel which worked well and his scaring has almost gone. We also gave him paracetamol so he was comfortable etc.

My kids had cp during the holidays. Pinetarsol baths were the best thing for my kids. I pulled put the old baby bath and set it up in front of the fire in the lounge whenever they got irritable.
I used calamine too (which was recommended by pharmacy, doctor and healthline so interesting to hear that others have been told not to use it). Healthline told me only to put it on the itchiest spots ( hard to determine with a 1yr old).
I got Mebo anti itch cream for ds too because he had it really bad in his nappy area and would scream when he went wees. The mebo acted as a barrier cream but made him look like the hulk when I used it all over (it's green).

When I got them (some time ago now), the doc said to have a bath in potassium permanganate (?sp). Can't remember what it was supposed to do, but between that making my skin a funny colour and the calamine lotion dotted everywhere, I looked hlarious! Must have worked though as have no scars and the itching decreased heaps.

we chose to do the immunisation for DS... however there is not much research into how long its effective for... so he may get it later in life ?? time will tell...
I have seen the effects of chicken pox and its just horrible... the scratching.. holes.. and scarring.. OUCH.. just didnt want to see my bubs go through that if i could help it
