Topic: help Posted: 10 September 2010 at 10:33pm |
my boy is 8 months old, since 6 months (just after starting solids) he has started waking up to 11 times a night, he screams, arches his back, pulls up his legs, etc.. and there is no way to calm him down until he lets out multiple farts and burps, or if we can't get the wind up I end up feeding him back to sleep which makes it worse later.
I have tried going dairy free but its not making much of a difference. We have also spent 1 night in hospital with him for blood in his nappy (suspected intersussception).
Any ideas?? I'm at my wits end. We end up co sleeping from about midnight each night otherwise I wouldn't get any sleep.
I'm also working 3 days a week and its so hard :(
He was waking once or twice a night previous to this but I think that was normal for his age, and I expected it to improve on solids not get worse. Every week I tell myself it can't get any worse - and it does

I'd be taking him to the Dr to get some allergy tests or something done.

Blood in the nappy is a sign of an allergy to wheat I think. Go and see a dr and get thim to do tests. Maybe quick google cheek but I'm sure I read somewhere it could be wheat

Thanks, I think its a sign of a dairy intolerance, which is why I had cut out dairy.
Our doctor said allergy tests are unreliable and dairy is too important to stop having (grrr) but the hospital has just referred us back to him for allergy tests so hopefully he will take us seriously once he gets the letter.
Reflux has also been suggested but he doesn't have the classic symptoms, and he had no problems (was sleeping through the night for months) before this

Oh Lizze poor you and your poor wee man. He sounds like he is in pain. I don't have any ideas except I think you should go back to your doctor and DEMAND he does something to help you and not just brush you off! It must be so hard for both of you.

Have you thought about cutting all solids out for a few days to a week and just BF/FF during that time? Plunket are only just starting to say that solids are more imprtant at 8mths so I am sure that a purely BF/FF diet for a few days won't hurt. That way you might be able to 'flush' the food out that he is possibly allergic to. Then maybe you could start reintroducing solids again slowly to try and work out what triggers his sore tummy. Maybe start with plain fruit and vege?
Whatever you decide to do, good luck!!

thanks, we cut right back to only pear and baby rice for a couple of weeks and it made no difference.
this week i have cut out baby rice so he only has pear for breakfast and carrot for lunch and tea (very limited diet, lol) ... we are now getting 90 minute sleeps out of him instead of 30

Oh hun, it's horrible having your baby waking in pain all night (and horrible not getting any sleep either). I know what you mean on the "it can't get any worse" - and then it does.
I'd hound the doctors for help, can you take a video of him when it happens for them to see? It does sound like an intolerance, but if it's still there when he goes back to just milk maybe it's not. It might just have happened at around the same time - could it be related to crawling/sitting or to the amount or frequency of his breast/bottle feeds? Can you get a good plunket nurse or someone on your side to help you hassle the doctors?
Good luck and I hope it gets better soon!

That sounds horrible for you all Lizze. Perhaps he has problem with digesting foods? I agree with the others tho, definitely try to see a specialist if you can as waking that many times must be extremely hard and it does kinda sound food related.
Hope you get it sorted soon. Big hugs to you xx

I don't really know what to suggest but I just wanted to mention that my DD had a big issue with carrot from when she started solids till she was well over 14 months old. Every time she had carrot her tummy would make horrible gurgly noises and she would spill heaps or vomit. I had never heard of people having issues with carrot and I still have never read anything but she definately had issues, every single time she had even a small amount. Maybe cut him right back to just pear or apple and formula/BM and see if that helps.

Also, it might be worth trying pro-biotics? They would increase the good bacteria in his gut and perhaps that might help with processing the food. Inner health plus make a kids probiotic and I have a feeling that someone mentioned they have a lactose free version if you are worried about dairy.

Oh Lizze hugs
It does sound like some sort of allergy. Have you tried cutting out wheat from your diet ?
Also things like corn/onions/cabbage/chocolate/caffeine lots of citrus can make bubs windy as well. If I even have a proper cup of tea instead of decaf Lewies does exactly what your bubs is doing.
And I can't eat anything with orange/yellow colouring( cheezels/fanta) as it upsets Lewie.

Oh that sucks Lizze, I bet he doesn't have kids. When Gabrielle was sick all the time last year she woke screaming 5 - 20 times a night. My plunket nurse told me not to get up to Gabrielle when she was crying in the night because I was creating a behavioural problem What rubbish! A sick child needs comforting whether its night time or day time.
If he has an ear infection or had been getting one the pressure in his ears may have been causing him to scream. He doesn't have glue ear does he? If so, when he lays down at night the pressure in his ears might be shifting causing pain and therefore night waking.

misscheeky, thanks the only thing out of that list that i really have is chocolate, but will cut that out.
haven't tried cutting out wheat (it sounded hard..)
he has a cold and a bad cough this week as well which isn't helping, but he has been doing this for 2 months now and I can't keep blaming colds/teething/milestones forever, lol
will let you know how the doctors go... a friend of a friend is having the same problem and her doctor put her baby on reflux meds, and I have heard she got a 6 hour sleep out of him, so might have to try that if nothing else works..

i think then that maybe the rice might be a contributing factor... check out this link... some of the things they describe sound just like your bub!

I agree, my son has allergies and the specialist said to only feed him kumara, pumpkin, carrot, pear, chicken breast, fish, lamb and rice (but he said definitely NOT baby rice, farex or uncle bens. he said give him the rice that indians and asians eat).
Also its a good idea when re introducing foods that you only give him 1 new food every 4-5 days to make sure he doesn't react to it.

My son also reacted quite badly to baby rice, which I thought would be good as it is so bland! Turns out amongst other things he has a wheat intolerance.

Lizzie it sounds like a really rough time i hope things improve soon.
this may not be any use at all but when my first DD was 3 months old she went on antibiotics and a week or so after this stopped sleeping arched her back screaming etc...... and the farting and pooping (constantly) she would also scream in pain while this was going on.
finally at 6 months (my doctor was useless) i worked out that it was possibly secondary lactose intolerance (thanks MR GOOGLE) in otherwords the antibiotics stripped her stomoach of good bacteria so she could not digest lactose in milk and becuase the more upset she got the more she fed it made the situation worse.
what worked for us (i didnt want to give up breastfeeding) was routine feeding and block feeding so i was feeding her 3 hourly but only one side. and for the first week would feed the same side for two feeds. within a few days i had a different baby.
