How do you know if your child has this rather than a regular tummy bug??

Caden had diarreah on Monday and then vomitted twice, afternoon, then evening, he was really unwell tuesday morning, had a high temp and was breathing heavy and fast, so off to the Dr's, she said other than his temp he was ok and to keep up fluids etc etc, which we didm he was miles betetr yesterday, but today the Diarreah is back and its nasty!

Isabella started vomitting this morning at 5.30 and its her Im a bit worried about, she vomitted 5 times between 5.50am and 8.30, she couldnt even keep her water down and was gagging really violently, then she brought up yellow bile
I called the nurse and have to keep an eye on her and try and keep fluids in her.

Does it sound like Rotavirus? if so, how long can I expect it to last for? I hate seeing my babies so unwell :(

I'd be taking Isabella to the doctors pronto if it was me. Sebastian had it when he was about 10 months old. It started very much the same way as Isabella. By 10.30am he was so dehydrated that the doctor sent him straight to hospital.

The way Sebastian was tested for Rotovirus was a stool sample. It wasn't detected in blood or urine tests that they did at the same time. He was in hospital overnight then was really lethagic and not eating for a further 5 days. It took about 7-8 days for him to be back to normal.

Good luck!

Hrm, I think the only way to know for sure is to have a stool sample.

A got it back in July and was terribly sick for days. I think it was 6 days before it stopped and it was hideous. He couldn't keep anyhting down and we were at the docs for monitoring daily pretty much.

Can't really offer any advice other than that I hope it passes quickly.

Oh no, poor kiddies.

I took Keira to the doctors as she had pooze and spews, but also was throwing up water, so wasnt keeping anything down, but she was mis diagnosed with a throat infection so we took her to another doctor who sent us to a&e as it had been a week by then and she was VERY dehydrated and the medication we were given was harsh on her empty stomach. But once we started givng her pedialyte she was still sick for 3 days afterwards, it hangs around for a while. I think after the diarrhea has stopped they are still catchy for 4 days after.

Hmmm, from your description of Caden I thought no, but from Isabella I thought yes. Definately take her to the doctor. If you can catch a poo and take it along they can do a stool sample.

When JJ had it, it started by him gagging and vomiting in his sleep. Then once it got going, it was FULL ON. Constant vomiting (couldn't even hold down water) for 5 days, and he started to come right on about the 8th day. He didn't even sit up for four of those days.

It was heartbreaking and I was glad we were in Starship when he got it. He ended up on an IV drip for fluids. I don't know how anyone would manage this at home.

I really hope this is just a normal tummy virus Sheena, I wouldn't wish the dreaded Roto on anyone.

Thanks for the replies

She woke from her sleep vomitting up fluidy stuff, so I got her up and gave her a pineapple fruju and she gobbled that up and its stayed down, and that was at roughly 11am, she hasnt been sick since then, but the yucky poos have started.

Shes onto her 4th sleep for the day she either just wanted to hug me or sleep, so Ive put her back to bed, her temps about 38 but Ive given her pamol so will review a bit later, and shes been drinking water and so far its stayed down so thats a relief!

I guess cos she drinking and no dehyrated shes fine now, but if she goes back down hill I'll be ringing the after hours for sure.

Bella was not well at all, not vomitting but runny poo's and she had temps up to 39 and she was really sleepy and miserable she was very clingy. Her temp finally broke this evening after some nurofen and then she was happy as and back to her normal self! I did ring the nurse again though and she said Im doing all the right things, but if I am worried bring her in. I decided she was ok cos she was drinking fluids and going wees etc

Caden chucked up water and banana at breakfast randomly! but after that he was fine and ate his toast, and has been fine since, but still had runny poos.

So I think tomorrow they both should be much better *fingers crossed*!! I hope Bella sleeps better tonight cos I am exhausted! Its been full on sickness since Monday

Thanks for asking
